Throw These Snack Cakes Away if You Have Them
Even if you don’t have the strongest sweet tooth, some sugar cravings come on so fast that it feels the only way to indulge it is with the easiest option. In many cases, that can mean picking up a prepackaged pastry if you’re out and about. But if your recent purchases have involved any popular baked goods, you may want to take a minute before you dig in. That’s because the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has just issued a warning for Tastykake and Mrs. Freshley’s snack cakes due to serious safety concerns. Read on to see if your sweet treat could be putting your health at risk.

Just like any other prepackaged food, dessert snacks can be a convenient way to get your sugar fix on the go. But this also means they’re subject to recalls when something goes wrong and puts the public’s safety at risk.
On June 30, Enjoy Life Natural Brands LLC announced it was voluntarily recalling 13 of its baked snack products, including different varieties and flavors of soft-baked cookies, chewy bars, “breakfast ovals,” and brownie bites sold at Walmart, Kroger, and Wegmans, as well as online on Amazon. The company said it pulled the products from shelves “out of an abundance of caution” after its own internal surveillance discovered there could potentially be hard plastic pieces in the affected items.
Another recall was issued on July 20 when Trader Joe’s posted an alert on its website about its Soft-Baked Snickerdoodles. The warning was part of a recall expansion by Enjoy Life Natural Brands, as they produce the cookies and also could contain “hard plastic pieces.” In all cases, customers were urged not the eat the treats and to throw them out or return them to their place of purchase.
Even snack cakes have been subject to recent health alerts. On June 8, the FDA announced that Prairie City Bakery voluntarily recalled 50,220 units of its Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Ooey Gooey Butter Cake. It was one of the many products pulled from shelves in connection to a sprawling recall issued by J.M. Smucker Co. for Salmonella contamination issues with its Jif peanut butter. But now, another warning has been issued for two other snack cakes.
On Oct. 7, Flowers Foods, Inc. announced that it had issued a recall for many of its Tastykake and Mrs. Freshley’s glazed pies. The affected items were distributed to stores across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico from Sept. 26, 2022, through Oct. 6, 2022.
According to the agency’s notice, the affected items include Mrs. Freshley’s Apple Fruit Pie, Mrs. Freshley’s Cherry Fruit Pie, Tastykake Glazed Apple Pie, Tastykake Glazed Caramel Apple Pie, Tastykake Glazed Cherry Pie, and Tastykake Glazed Lemon Flavored Pie. The Tastykake Variety Glazed Pie Shipper is also included, which contains Tastykake Glazed Apple Pie, Tastykake Glazed Cherry Pie, and Tastykake Glazed Lemon Flavored Pie.
The recalled products are all marked with either an “Enjoy By” date of 10/28/2022 through 11/07/2022 and/or product codes 307 2263 through 307 2274. Complete information on the UPC numbers can be found on the recall notice.

The company says it initiated the recall after discovering the items included an ingredient that may contain soy without listing it on the product’s label. As a known food allergen, the FDA warns that some customers “run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction” by consuming the product.
According to the FDA, the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) is a law that requires all major food allergens to be listed on any food product’s packaging that the agency regulates. This includes milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.
So far, the company says no customers have reported adverse reactions or illnesses from eating the snack cakes. However, the agency advises anyone who purchased the recalled Tastykakes and Mrs. Freshley’s glazed pies to throw out the product immediately or bring it back to their place of purchase for a full refund.
