Third House speaker hopeful fails to secure position on third vote: Washington Photos of the Week
The Speaker Showdown: Jordan’s Bid Falls Short
The week began with a glimmer of hope as Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) expressed confidence in Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) as the next House Speaker. However, by the end of the week, Jordan faced the same fate as McCarthy, failing to secure enough votes to lead the fractured House GOP.
House GOP Conference Votes to Abandon Jordan as Speaker Nominee
As a result, the House now enters its third week of paralysis without a speaker. McCarthy’s removal as speaker on October 3rd led to the first closed-door internal election, with Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) emerging as the frontrunner. However, Scalise withdrew from the race upon realizing he lacked the necessary votes to win.
With no clear candidate, Republicans turned to Jordan, who sought a floor vote to exert public pressure on the holdouts. Unfortunately, his support dwindled, with 20 Republicans voting against him on the first ballot and 22 on the second.
In an attempt to find a solution, Jordan proposed expanding the powers of Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-NC) until January, aiming to restore order in the House. However, the GOP caucus rejected this proposal, making Jordan the third Republican this month to fall short of the near-unanimous support required to lead the House. On his final floor vote, Jordan garnered 25 no votes.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden made a trip to Israel to demonstrate support for the Jewish state following the Hamas attack on October 7th. In a separate event, approximately 300 protesters were arrested on Capitol Hill for illegally demonstrating inside a House office building, demanding a cease-fire in Gaza. Despite Biden’s request for additional aid to Israel and Ukraine, the ongoing speaker fight has hindered the House’s ability to pass any legislation for 18 days.
House Republicans will regroup on Monday for another forum, where a growing list of new candidates will present their bids for the speakership.

The House has been at a standstill since October 3rd, unable to elect a speaker and address pressing matters.
What challenges did Jim Jordan face as a potential speaker nominee?
However, the damage caused by the contentious race for speaker has left the GOP Conference divided and struggling to find a consensus candidate.
Jim Jordan, a staunch conservative and co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus, had expressed his interest in becoming the next House Speaker following Paul Ryan’s retirement announcement. His reputation as a fierce defender of President Trump and his conservative views made him a popular choice among the more conservative members of the party.
The week started with some optimism as Kevin McCarthy, the previous frontrunner for the position, publicly expressed his confidence in Jordan’s ability to lead. McCarthy’s endorsement was seen as a significant boost to Jordan’s campaign and raised hopes of a united GOP Conference rallying behind him.
However, as the week progressed, it became clear that Jordan’s bid for speaker was facing challenges. Several moderate and establishment Republicans expressed concerns about his leadership style and ability to work with members across the aisle. These concerns were exacerbated by the recent allegations of a cover-up in the Ohio State University sexual abuse scandal during Jordan’s time as an assistant wrestling coach.
In a closed-door meeting held on Friday, the GOP Conference voted to abandon Jordan as the speaker nominee. This decision was seen as a major blow to his campaign and a sign of the deep divisions within the party. It also added further uncertainty to the already chaotic situation in the House, as the search for a new speaker continues.
With McCarthy’s withdrawal and Jordan’s failure to secure enough support, the field of potential candidates for speaker has become more fragmented. Steve Scalise, the House Majority Whip and a close ally of McCarthy, emerged as a frontrunner, but he also faces challenges in gaining the consensus of the divided GOP Conference.
The Speaker showdown in the House reflects the broader divisions within the Republican Party. The battle between the more conservative members and the moderate wing is playing out not only in the speaker race but also in policy debates and election campaigns across the country. These divisions pose a significant challenge for the GOP as they head into the crucial midterm elections.
The chaos and disarray within the GOP Conference not only hinder the ability to pass legislation but also undermine the party’s ability to present a united front to voters. The lack of a clear leader and the ongoing infighting will likely have negative consequences for the Republican Party in the upcoming elections.
As the House enters its third week without a speaker, the question remains: who will be able to bridge the gaps within the party and lead them forward? The answer to this question will have far-reaching implications for the future of the Republican Party and its ability to govern effectively.
