‘There’s a time limit’ for democratic socialism: Tiana Lowe Doescher

Tiana Lowe Doescher, an economics columnist for the Washington Examiner, argues that democratic socialism is highly likely to fade despite recent successes in various states. She believes there is a limit to how long such initiatives can be financially sustained locally, citing comments made on fox News. She highlights that while places like New York still support socialist policies such as city-run grocery stores, free childcare, and public transportation-plans that are projected to be implemented city-wide within four years-other cities like Chicago are struggling with budget gaps and revenue challenges. Doescher notes a “flight of wealth” from blue states to states like Texas and Florida and suggests that even if leaders like mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York push socialist policies, they may not withstand long-term economic realities. She mentions that unlike previous generations, modern society may not experience the same direct consequences of communism, implying a more detached outlook among today’s populace.

Washington Examiner economics columnist Tiana Lowe Doescher argued that democratic socialism will eventually fade out despite consistent wins in states across the country.

“There’s a time limit for how long you can bankroll this locally,” Doescher said on Fox News’s Fox News @ Night on Friday.

Democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D-NY) said he is creating city-run grocery stores, and also promised free childcare, which is expected to roll out city-wide within four years, according to New York City’s official website, and free public transportation.

Doescher said that “Mamdani is lucky because New York is New York, and even if he screws up New York City royally, it will always have Wall Street, it will always have Broadway.”

She argued that places like Chicago, however, are struggling.

“[Mayor[MayorBrandon Johnson]’s running out of money and time,” Doescher said.

Johnson has faced criticism over budget gaps, and what he called a “revenue challenge.”

Doescher said there is a “flight of wealth” in blue states, where the wealthy are fleeing to states like Texas and Florida.

“At a certain point, they leave,” Doescher said.

“We don’t have in living memory the real consequences of communism like a lot of our grandparents did.”
