‘The Wonder Years’ Actress Danica McKellar Credits Her Parents For Keeping Her ‘Grounded’ As A Child Star

Actress Danica McKellar, famous for her role on “The Wonder Years,” revealed that her parents played a significant role in keeping her grounded and ensuring she enjoyed a regular upbringing despite her celebrity status.

During an interview with Fox News Digital, the 48-year-old actress explained how her parents made sure she had a normal childhood even though she worked as a Hollywood star.

“I’m very fortunate to have two parents who never overemphasized the importance of Hollywood or my acting career,” she said. “It was just a fun, cool thing that I did. But family, health, education all came first. Always. Never a question about that.”

Danica and her younger sister, Crystal, both worked as child actors in the 1980s and 1990s, but always made sure to prioritize quality family time over industry events. For example, McKellar missed the Emmy Awards ceremony in 1989 when “The Wonder Years” won after its first season, to go on a pre-planned family trip.

“My dad’s work schedule was tough, so it really wasn’t a question,” Danica said. “I was like, ‘Yeah, of course we’re going to do that. That’s more important.’ And I remember watching the Emmys from our tiny little motel room in Oregon the night before we hit the river.”

The “Dancing with the Stars” competitor also described the importance of family time over work, explaining how moments like that established their family values.

“I had a lot of core memories from that trip, and just the fact that my parents made that decision, and it was a clear choice,” she said. “That type of thing, that’s just indicative and representative of how they treated me and my sister growing up.”

Danica also revealed that her parents treated her like a normal child apart from her work in Hollywood. She had to do chores at home and was always kept grounded, which helped her stay aware of her values and maintain a sense of normalcy in her life.
