The View’s season premiere focuses on strategies to prevent Trump’s candidacy.
The View Hosts Discuss Strategies to Prevent Trump’s 2024 Presidential Run
The hosts of ABC’s The View gathered on Tuesday to brainstorm ways to stop former President Donald Trump from regaining the White House in 2024. The season 27 premiere was filled with lively discussions and passionate arguments.
Can Trump Be Stopped?
“Ninety-one felony charges, four indictments in various districts, and an array of civil cases. He was twice impeached,” co-host Joy Behar reminded her fellow panel members. “So is there anything that we can do to stop this guy from running? Because, obviously, he’s a traitor.”
Co-host Sunny Hostin, who is also ABC’s senior legal correspondent and analyst, confidently stated that Trump is bound to be convicted of something. She pointed out that federal defendants are convicted 97% of the time and highlighted the incriminating evidence in the Georgia case.
Legal Barriers to Trump’s Candidacy
Hostin mentioned a legal theory that could prevent Trump from running under the 14th Amendment. According to this theory, since he took part in an “insurrection” against the country, he violated his oath of office and would be ineligible to run.
She cited the case of Madison Cawthorn, who was found ineligible to run by a federal appeals court due to his participation in an insurrection, even without a conviction. Hostin emphasized that this legal argument should be the focus for those hoping to keep Trump out of the 2024 race.
Co-host Ana Navarro questioned how Republicans could support Trump given his alleged criminal history. Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin expressed her belief that Trump would be the nominee unless someone effectively challenged his unfitness within the next six months.
The Importance of Early Primary Wins
Griffin stressed the significance of the primary calendar, stating that if Trump isn’t beaten in Iowa and New Hampshire, it would be game over. She also mentioned former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley as a potential contender, highlighting her criticism of the GOP on spending hypocrisy and climate change.
Griffin suggested that Haley could gain more support if she directly confronted Trump’s unfitness and made a strong case against him.
While discussing alternative candidates, entrepreneur and GOP hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy received criticism. Behar condemned his statements against Mike Pence and his admission that he would have acted differently during the election certification process.
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg was absent from the discussion, reportedly battling her most recent case of COVID-19.
