The Story Of Saint Patrick: How A Former Slave Brought Christianity To Ireland

St. Patrick’s Day is like most American holidays, with Americans knowing very little about it except that it has a loose connection with Irish culture.

Patrick claimed that he dreamt one night while in captivity that God was telling Patrick to run away and return to his village, which is located in modern-day Scotland. “You have fasted well. Very soon you will return to your native country,” He claimed an angel told him. After walking 200 miles, he was able catch a British boat and began a long return journey to his village.

Patrick had a life-changing dream years back in his homeland. He compared this dream to a “dream” “vision like the apostle Paul’s at Troas,” Patrick stated that he saw an Irishman asking Patrick to return to Ireland. “We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us,” Patrick Reprinted An Irishman asked him during a dream. 

Patrick was determined to return to Ireland with the mission to spread Christianity. However, he knew that he would face opposition from Irish pagan traditions. He was so dedicated to spreading the gospel that he was willing even to die to do it.

“For daily I expect to be murdered or betrayed or reduced to slavery if the occasion arises. But I fear nothing, because of the promises of Heaven; for I have cast myself into the hands of Almighty God, who reigns everywhere,” Patrick wrote his reflections. 

Patrick’s efforts helped many people in Ireland, including King Loegaire to convert to Christianity. After a confrontation between the Christian and a group druids led to the conversion of the king. According The Dictionary of Irish Biography.

Patrick is now known as The Apostle of Christ because of his success in evangelism. “Apostle of Ireland.” W.D. Killen, who was a church historian, wrote “There can be no reasonable doubt that Patrick preached the gospel, that he was a most zealous and efficient evangelist, and that he is entitled to be called the Apostle of Ireland.”

Patrick’s influence in Ireland is extensive. According Thomas Cahill is the author of The Best-Seller Book. “How the Irish Saved Civilization,” Patrick was likely to have helped bring an end to the human sacrifices on this island. 

Cahill attributes the Irish to keeping Western civilization alive thanks to the monasteries established on the island by Patrick. The monasteries kept the classical tradition alive after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Later, the manuscripts that were preserved by the monks were used to revive European civilization. 

“And that,” Cahill Submitted, “is how the Irish saved civilization.”

The church was founded in 1631, more than 1,000 years after Patrick’s death. Recognized March 17 was designated as a feast to honour the patron saint of Ireland. The holiday has been celebrated in many ways, including among traditional Irish communities around the globe. 

Many legends and stories were told about Patrick’s impact on Ireland and his deeds. But what is certain is that he brought Christianity back to an area where it was not before. This is why St. Patrick’s Day should be remembered.
