The Missing GOP Agenda

Sarah Huckabee Sanders spoke out strongly in her State of the Union speech on Tuesday. Just weeks into her term, the Arkansas governor criticized President Biden’s appeasement of the radical Left. She offered a preview of the next year’s GOP presidential nominee.

Sanders reminded that, while she is the youngest president of the country and the governor of the Natural State, Biden is also the oldest. She pointed out that, while she is the first woman to be elected governor in the Natural State, some prominent Democrats still have difficulty defining what a woman is. She likened Biden’s speech to a tall tale told by a child and lambasted him for his bungled response in the crisis at the south border, for inattention to crime, as well as for the delay in shooting the Chinese spy ball down. “President Biden is unwilling to defend our border, defend our skies, and defend our people,” She spoke. “He is unfit to serve as commander in chief.”

Conservatives praised Sanders’s indictment against President Biden and her call to a new generation GOP leaders. She cleverly framed today’s politics as a competition between normal and crazy—with the Democrats acting cray-cray. “Every day,” She said that left-wing culture warriors are telling Americans that “we must partake in their rituals, salute their flags, and worship their false idols, all while big government colludes with Big Tech to strip away the most American thing there is—your freedom of speech.”

These lines provide a boost to the populist base. But, I’m skeptical that they will persuade independent voters who vote in elections. The well-stated remarks of Governor Sanders were a continuation of the Republican strategy from a disappointing midterm election. The GOP must confront the two most important topics Sanders did not address if it wants to win 2024: abortion and the economy.

Sanders did not mention or allude to the most important Supreme Court rulings in decades. Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization This remarkable victory was a win for both the conservative legal movement as well as the pro-life cause. It was not brought up by this prominent pro-life woman.

Biden did not even mention abortion in his speech. He only gave the subject five sentences. He did, however, say what he was for—writing an abortion guarantee into federal law—and what he was
