The Difference Between The Left And Right, In One Arraignment

Former President Donald Trump was formally arraigned on Tuesday, while hundreds of Resistance members camped outside with their cameras and press passes. Some version of this was always going to happen, and he knew they would too, which is why he moved his operation from hostile New York City to friendly Florida in 2019.

This is not surprising, as during his four-year presidency, Trump suffered through various scandals, including Russiagate, Mueller-obstructiongate, Ukrainegate, Post Officegate, and even Stormygate. According to a CNN poll, more than three-quarters of Americans think Trump’s arrest is politically motivated, and 60 percent think it’s okay anyway.

While the former president has been the target of shadowy figures in the past, the man who finally pressed charges is a fairly standard leftist, Alvin Bragg. In contrast, Republicans’ “lock her up” chants were only political theater, and right-wing fascism was never a real threat under the Trump administration.

The American left, however, actually has the power to undermine administrations and even arrest its enemies. This inherent power means that mid-level functionaries who believe their cause is just can use their powers to punish their political enemies. The execution is where loyal lieutenants like Bragg come in, who openly bragged about his role and his intentions for Trump.

Although Republicans accuse their opponents of hypocrisy, they have no real power to affect as hardline a policy as they are accused of. The American left, in contrast, can actually wield its power to the detriment of its political opponents without any fear of being held accountable for it.

The game will go on, and while Republicans may claim they are too principled to respond in kind, the weak will continue to fling helplessly against the strong.
