A woman who made death threats against Judge Aileen Cannon, the judge overseeing Donald Trump’s classified documents case, has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison. Tiffani Shea Gish, 50, called Cannon’s chambers in Florida from her home in Houston, Texas, on three separate occasions, threatening to shoot her in the head. The Department of Justice revealed that Gish even claimed to have hired snipers and sent a bomb to Cannon’s home.
In November, Gish pleaded guilty to using interstate communications to threaten, kidnap, or injure. In addition to her prison sentence, she will also undergo three years of supervised release.
“Holding Tiffani Gish accountable for her threats to assassinate a federal judge sends a strong message that we have no tolerance for those – who often hide behind a far-off keyboard or phone line – seeking to undermine our democratic institutions by threatening the safety of the people who help those same institutions thrive,” said U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
Prosecutors have yet to determine which U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility Gish will serve her sentence in. Texas has 10 facilities, and Gish will be among the minority of female federal inmates in the country, making up just over 6%.
Donald Trump nominated Judge Aileen Cannon to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida in May 2020, and she was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in November 2020. Cannon’s ruling to have an independent special master review the documents seized from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home was overturned by a higher court. The trial is scheduled for May of this year.
