Texas Democrat PAC Releases Back-To-School Ad Showing Child In Body Armor
The Mothers Against Greg Abbott PAC released a back-to-school ad Monday featuring a young boy wearing body armor and a helmet for his first day of school.
In the 30-second ad, a mother dressed her elementary school-aged son for school in a helmet and bullet proof vest with cheerful background music calling for keeping “children safe and free.” She then snapped a photograph of her son staring into the camera while holding a slate labeled, “First Day of School.”
“Little boys and little girls following the rules, getting ready for the first day of school,” the song began. “Politicians say they make our land safe and free, they’re supposed to stand for you and me. Keep our children safe for you and me.”
The Democratic grassroots PAC has attempted to garner support for Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s opponent, Democratic Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke. It has urged voters to donate to the PAC’s ActBlue account to combat what they call “Abbott’s ‘increasingly divisive, dangerous, and downright stupid policies.’”
The organization has called on Abbott to take action to prevent gun violence against children in schools in the aftermath of the shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which left 19 children and 2 fourth-grade teachers dead. The group is specifically calling on the governor to pass universal background checks, raise the minimum gun-purchasing age to 21, and implement mandatory waiting periods.
“We can’t keep waiting for tragedy to strike, or kicking the can once it does,” the group said on Twitter. “Sign our letter to Greg Abbott demanding action to keep our kids safe from gun violence – or face the consequences come November.”
Recent polls show Abbott leading O’Rourke by an average of nearly seven points, according to RealClear Politics.
