Palestinian terrorists opened fire on a pier this week that U.S. forces are constructing in the Mediterranean Sea to help bring aid into the Gaza Strip.

The mortar attack happened on Wednesday as United Nations officials and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were touring the project off the coast of central Gaza.

“The terrorist organizations continue to systematically harm humanitarian efforts while risking the lives of UN workers, while Israel allows the supply of aid to the residents of the Gaza Strip,” the IDF said.

The U.N. confirmed that there was a terrorist attack on the site while they were inspecting the pier, according to The Times of Israel.

Although there are multiple Palestinian terrorist groups inside Gaza, no specific group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Associated Press reported that an official for Hamas told the publication that it will “resist any foreign military presence involved with the port project.”

The report said that aid groups have expressed serious concern about their safety given the presence of the terrorist groups and the fact that the area is an active war zone.

The U.S. Department of Defense signaled on Thursday that it was monitoring the situation after the attack reportedly caused some damage in the marshaling yard area for U.S. delivery of humanitarian aid off the coast of Gaza.

President Joe Biden’s pier project in Gaza is expected to cost U.S. taxpayers approximately $200 million for only a few months of operations, ABC News reported.

“No U.S. boots will be on the ground,” Biden claimed when he announced the project last month. “A temporary pier will enable a massive increase in the amount of humanitarian assistance getting into Gaza every day.”
