‘Tennessee Three’ member forms committee to explore 2024 Senate run.

Democratic Tennessee State Rep. Gloria⁢ Johnson Explores Potential Senate Run

Democratic Tennessee state Rep. Gloria Johnson, a member of the “Tennessee Three,” has taken a‌ significant step towards entering the race for ⁢the Senate in 2024. Johnson’s decision brings her‍ closer to⁣ challenging Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) next⁤ year, ⁤following a tumultuous incident ⁤that almost ⁤led to her expulsion from the state House.

Standing Up to Bullies and Seeking Better Leadership

In a⁤ statement to the Associated ‍Press, Johnson expressed her motivation for considering the race, saying, “Tennessee has a Senator that stands with bullies, I have a reputation for standing up to bullies.‍ I’m taking a serious look at this⁤ race and ‍having great conversations with folks who are hungry ⁢for better leadership in⁢ Washington.”

Johnson’s commitment to standing up against injustice and advocating for improved leadership resonates with many who are seeking change.

A Controversial ‌Incident ‌and National Attention

In March, during protests, Johnson and her fellow Democratic state Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson disrupted chamber ‌proceedings ‌by using‍ a megaphone to call for gun control laws and disregarding decorum rules. State House Speaker Cameron⁤ Sexton cited their actions as a violation of House rules. While Jones and‍ Pearson were expelled by ⁣Republican lawmakers, Johnson narrowly survived expulsion by one vote.

The expulsion of the three members gained national attention, leading to an‌ invitation from ⁤President Joe Biden to the White⁢ House. Jones and Pearson were later reinstated and elected back to their seats, showcasing the significance ⁢of their cause.

Blackburn’s Future Plans

As of now, Sen. Marsha Blackburn has⁢ not announced whether she will run for a ⁣second Senate⁣ term. However, she has filed the necessary paperwork,‍ keeping her options open.

In the 2018 Tennessee Senate ⁢race, Blackburn emerged ⁢victorious, defeating ‍former Democratic Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen with ⁢a 54.7% to 43.9% ⁣margin. Notably, the race gained national attention when singer ‌Taylor ⁢Swift, who⁤ had ‍previously avoided ‌political endorsements, publicly supported Bredesen.
