Ted Cruz says ‘there will be a time’ to decide on 2028 White House run

He reaffirmed his desire to be president publicly during an interview on texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s podcast, stating clearly, “I want to be president.” While he expressed ambitions about the future, he refrained from committing to a 2028 run, emphasizing that “time will tell.” Cruz’s recent comments continue to fuel speculation about his potential presidential campaign in the next election cycle.

In an appearance on NBC News’s Meet the Press, Cruz was asked directly if he was “seriously considering” a run for president in 2028, 12 years after his failed 2016 run against President Donald Trump. He avoided directly answering the question, but gave plenty of fuel to those speculating that he would.

“You know, the Book of Ecclesiastes tells us there’s a time for every season, and this is not that season right now. This is the season of the midterms, and I’ll tell you, I’m spending my time on the road, campaigning for candidates all over the country,” he said, outlining the campaigning he had done in this cycle.
“I think most Americans want to see good policies, good jobs put in place. And so I’m going to spend my time between now and Election Day fighting for the midterms,” he added.
When pressed for a yes or no, Cruz avoided a direct answer.
“As I said, there will be a time for that conversation,” he said.
Cruz revived talks of his presidential aims last week, first when he undercut assumptions that Vice President JD Vance would be coronated as the 2028 presidential pick, then on Wednesday when he directly stated he wanted to be president in an appearance on Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s podcast.
“It’s no secret that I want to be president,” Cruz told Patrick.

“I will say, this is a bug that history has proved is rarely ended,” he added. “It is a permanent and often fatal bug.”
As on Sunday, however, he refused to directly commit to running in 2028, saying, “Time will tell.”
