Ted Cruz blames Biden for Macron ‘openly screwing the US’

Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, has attacked President Joe Biden’s foreign policy, calling it “screwed up,” in light of French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for “strategic autonomy” in Europe. “Even the left-wing leaders of Europe — whom Biden has assiduously courted (and obsequiously a**-kissed) — are openly screwing the U.S.,” Cruz tweeted, linking to an article covering the controversy.

Macron’s comments instigated backlash from the United States as he called for European “strategic autonomy” and appeared to belittle Washington’s policy regarding Taiwan. These comments were made during a three-day trip to China last week, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Macron stated in an interview with Politico: “The paradox would be that, overcome with panic, we believe we are just America’s followers. The question Europeans need to answer … is it in our interest to accelerate [a crisis] on Taiwan? No. The worse thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the U.S.”

Several U.S. politicians voiced their opposition to Macron’s statements, while noting that America has supported Europe for decades, especially during the war in Ukraine.

Ted Cruz questioned whether President Biden could have done more to avoid mishandling foreign policy, saying: “Serious Q: Could Biden possibly have screwed up foreign policy more?”

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby downplayed Macron’s comments, stressing the “terrific bilateral cooperation” between the two countries. Biden spoke with Macron earlier this month and hosted him for a state visit last year. Macron left for the Netherlands on Tuesday for a two-day visit, while Biden traveled to Northern Ireland for a four-day trip.
