Tea Party group ramps up poll-watching trainings before midterm elections

EXCLUSIVE — The nation’s largest Tea Party group, Tea Party Patriots Action, is emerging as a leader in training thousands of poll watchers and workers across several battleground states before the midterm elections.
The next training for the group will occur a day after the Republican National Committee midterm convention ends next week. Tea Party Patriots Action will host a training for hundreds of poll watchers and poll workers in Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada. Other states that are targeted for training include Arizona, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, while trainings have already been held in Ohio, Texas, and Georgia.

The goal of the training is to help local voters understand election procedures, report problems in real time, and strengthen public trust in election outcomes after the chaos of the 2020 presidential election, according to the group’s founder, Jenny Beth Martin, who shared the details with the Washington Examiner in an exclusive interview.
Martin said in-person training across several states aims to reach anywhere between 800 and 1,000 people, while online training and recruitment can reach between 7,500 and 8,000 people.
“We want to make sure that Americans trust the outcome of the elections, and one of the best ways to do that is to have people who are in the room who can come back out and be witnesses to what they saw, and hopefully they don’t see anything funny going on,” Martin told the Washington Examiner.
Martin, who is attending the convention before heading to Reno, also said going “from the convention to the training is going to energize everybody.”
“The people who attend the training, they likely were not at the convention, so I think they’re going to really enjoy hearing from people who’ve been at the convention,” she said.
The trainings are being held in concert with numerous groups, including Honest Elections Project, Save Our States, Turning Point Action, American Majority, Heritage Action, and American Constitutional Rights Union.
Tea Party Patriots Action began training poll watchers in 2012, but after the 2020 election, it increased its operations to help ensure American trust in the electoral system.
Election integrity remains a key priority for the group, following in Trump’s footsteps. They have consistently advocated the Senate to pass the SAVE America Act, despite Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s insistence that the upper chamber does not have the 60-vote threshold to bypass a filibuster.
But that hasn’t deterred Tea Party Patriots Action.
“People across the country, especially with our base, are upset that the SAVE America Act did not get passed into law,” Martin said. “We’re trying to make sure that people understand, even though that didn’t get passed into law yet, there are other ways we can work to help secure the election.”
Both political parties are gearing up to handle any electoral or legal issues that could pop up during the election.
Former U.S. pardon attorney Ed Martin left the Trump administration to focus on Republican legal fights in the 2026 and 2028 elections. The RNC will operate hotlines in its 22 target states for voters to report Election Day issues, in addition to an online portal at protectthevote.com.
Democrats are building out a nationwide “voter protection infrastructure” that includes a bevy of lawyers and tens of thousands of election observers nationwide. For the first time, the Democratic National Committee will also have an internal litigation team led by director Dan Freeman, a former trial attorney at the Justice Department.
Tea Party Patriots Action’s Martin claimed that for both political parties, “when it comes to election integrity, it’s all hands on deck from national groups, from state groups, and we work together towards the same goal.”
