Taylor Lorenz claims that the NY Times only permits ‘right-wing opinions
A Former New York Times Journalist Claims the Newspaper Suppresses Left-Wing Opinions
In a bold statement, Taylor Lorenz, a former New York Times journalist and current tech reporter for The Washington Post, revealed that the renowned newspaper only allows its writers to express “right-wing opinions,” while silencing left-wing views. Lorenz made this claim in a thought-provoking post on Instagram’s Threads.
Lorenz emphasized, “Anyone who’s worked as a journalist at the NYT knows that journalists there are absolutely allowed to loudly espouse political opinions, you just have to espouse the *right* political opinions. Right-wing opinions are fine, left-wing opinions are not.”
She went on to share her personal experiences, stating, “For instance, at the NYT I wasn’t allowed to express the ‘opinion’ that online harassment was a bad thing, in the midst of having my entire family harassed and doxxed. I also once had to delete a tweet where I said I don’t like living in America lol. But saying ‘wokes’ are taking over campus is totally fine in their book.”
Lorenz’s post sparked both amusement and disbelief on social media. Elon Musk, owner of X, couldn’t help but react with laughter, commenting, “The parody writes itself,” accompanied by two laughing emojis.

Journalist Adam Rubenstein, who also worked at the Times, expressed his disbelief, stating, “This person lives in an alternate reality.”
While some questioned the validity of Lorenz’s claims, others sarcastically remarked on the Times’ supposed right-wing bias. One user wrote, “When I think of the NYT, I definitely think of it being right wing.”
However, it is worth noting that the Times frequently publishes articles that support left-wing causes and viewpoints.

In October, the Times faced criticism for falsely reporting that the Israeli military bombed a hospital in Gaza, leading X to remove the Times’ verification badge.
Furthermore, the Times published an article in May that advised readers on U.S. cities that grant more “rights” to people engaging in polyamory.
Lorenz herself has often been criticized for her opinions and reporting tactics. In a controversial article for The Washington Post, she revealed the identity of Chaya Raichik, the woman behind the popular Libs of TikTok account on X. The Post faced accusations of doxxing and later removed the link.
Lorenz has also been vocal about her opposition to lifting pandemic restrictions, such as mandatory face masks, citing the risk it poses to immunocompromised individuals like herself. She continues to wear a face mask in public, even as recently as this year.
What steps should the New York Times take to address concerns about editorial practices and ensure ideological diversity

Many social media users also chimed in, expressing their disbelief at the allegations made by Lorenz. Some questioned the credibility of her claims, while others shared their own experiences that contradicted her statements.
However, this is not the first time the New York Times has faced accusations of suppressing certain perspectives. Over the years, the newspaper has been accused of having a liberal bias and promoting left-wing ideologies in its reporting. Critics argue that this bias is reflected in the choice of topics covered, the framing of stories, and the selection of op-ed contributors.
For a publication that prides itself on being the “paper of record,” these allegations are concerning. The New York Times has a responsibility to provide fair and balanced reporting, allowing for a range of perspectives to be heard. Journalists should be free to express their opinions without fear of retribution, as long as it does not compromise the integrity and objectivity of their work.
If the claims made by Lorenz are true, it raises serious questions about the editorial practices at the New York Times, and whether the newspaper is truly living up to its values of impartiality and openness to diverse viewpoints. The suppression of any political opinion, whether left-wing or right-wing, undermines the principles of a free press and limits the public’s access to information.
In recent years, there has been an increasing polarization in media coverage, with outlets being accused of being either too liberal or too conservative, catering to specific ideological agendas. This not only hampers the pursuit of truth but also perpetuates the division within society.
As consumers of news, it is important for us to be aware of potential biases in the media outlets we rely on. We should seek out diverse perspectives from a range of sources in order to form a well-rounded understanding of the issues at hand. Media organizations, like the New York Times, must make a conscious effort to foster an environment that encourages ideological diversity and ensures that all voices are heard.
In response to the allegations, the New York Times should conduct an internal review of its editorial practices and make any necessary changes to address concerns about bias and suppression of certain viewpoints. As the institution that sets the standard for journalistic integrity, it is crucial that they uphold the values of objectivity and fairness.
Furthermore, journalists should also be encouraged to speak out about their experiences, allowing for open discussions and constructive criticism within the industry. It is through these conversations that progress can be made and a more inclusive and diverse media landscape can be achieved.
The New York Times has a responsibility not only to its readers but also to the profession of journalism as a whole. It must strive to create an environment where journalists feel free to express their opinions without fear of censorship or retribution. Only then can the newspaper truly fulfill its role as a source of reliable and unbiased information.
