Tammy Baldwin announces 2024 Senate reelection bid for third term

Senator Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat from Wisconsin, has declared that she will be seeking a third term and running for reelection in 2024, making her the latest Democratic incumbent to enter the race as the party braces itself for a battle to retain its slim majority in the Senate. Her announcement came as she pledged to continue championing the cause of the working class.

Wisconsin is emerging as a critical battleground state for the 2024 elections, as Republicans seek to gain a bigger majority in the House and flip the Senate to their control. Democrats, however, will have to defend 23 of the 33 seats that will be up for reelection in 2024.

Baldwin has had a resilient political career, having defeated Republican opponents in the past, including four-term former Governor Tommy Thompson to win an open Senate seat in 2012. Her win made her the first openly gay person and woman to represent Wisconsin in the Senate. In 2018, she was reelected by a margin of over 10 percentage points.

The Democrats, for their part, are yet to announce a Republican challenger to Baldwin. The National Republican Senatorial Committee, however, criticized her voting record, claiming she has often voted alongside those on the far-left. Baldwin’s reelection campaign is expected to focus on topics such as abortion and reproductive freedom after she reintroduced the Women’s Health Protection Act last month.

The senator’s announcement comes on the heels of recent Democratic victories in Wisconsin. Most notable of these was the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, where liberal Judge Janet Protasiewicz defeated conservative former Justice Daniel Kelly, flipping the majority of the court for the first time in 15 years. Democrats now have a one-vote majority on critical issues such as gun control, abortion and redistricting, as well as the 2024 presidential race.
