Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico’s apparent abuse of Texas’s voter registration process stoked criticism Wednesday from his Republican opponent in a tight race, as the pair continue to exchange accusations of voter fraud.
Talarico last month accused GOP candidate Ken Paxton, who is also Texas’s attorney general, of voting illegally in six elections in a row from the wrong address, citing an investigation from ProPublica and the Texas Tribune.

This week, Paxton’s camp sought to turn the tables, accusing Talarico of voter fraud after a fresh analysis from ProPublica and the Texas Tribune concluded the Democrat voted in five elections using his parents’ address instead of where he lives.
“Everything about James Talarico is FAKE,” Paxton wrote in a post to X slamming Talarico for “voting from a FAKE home address.”
Matthew Wilson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University, told the news organizations that Paxton’s and Talarico’s cases highlight how easy it can be to “run afoul of the letter of the law.”
“I think it could be reasonably used as a charge of hypocrisy against either of them because both of them have condemned the other for an action quite similar to what they themselves appear to have done,” Wilson said.
The investigation found that after Talarico purchased a home in June 2022, he did not change his voter registration address until September 2024 and continued to vote using his parents’ address. Talarico’s house is in the same county as his parents’ home, which is about 6 miles away. It is in the state House district he represents but in different jurisdictions for some local elections.
The newsrooms’ investigation into Paxton found that after appearing to move out of the Collin County home he shared with his wife in 2024, the attorney general continued to vote six times using that address over a two-year period. It is unclear where Paxton lived during that time, but he seems to be linked to a home in neighboring Denton County, where voters select a different slate of local officials than in Collin County.

The saga comes as Paxton and Talarico are engaged in one of the most high-profile Senate battles in the country. Talarico is aiming to become the first Democrat to win a statewide race in Texas since 1988 — an outcome Republicans are desperately trying to thwart, as it could cost the GOP its Senate majority.
The latest polling shows Talarico winning the race in November, albeit within the margin of error. Prediction markets indicate a different outcome, handing Paxton a narrow victory this fall.
