Super Bowl 2024: NFL’s Harbaugh urges players to prioritize family and faith
Baltimore Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh Reflects on Faith and Family Ahead of Super Bowl
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh reflected on his team’s season ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl game, calling faith and family the “most important thing” regardless of a game’s outcome.
Harbaugh appeared on One Nation with Brian Kilmeade Saturday to give greater context for how his faith and family helped him respond to the Ravens’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the American Football Conference Championship last month, ending the team’s quest for the Super Bowl.
“I do believe Jesus is the author and the creator, the alpha, the omega, our Lord and Savior, I believe that. It’s not just out there in the atmosphere, it’s real, it’s in our hearts,” Harbaugh said. “I told our guys the day after the loss, that our job, our goal, what we want to try to accomplish is to do as much as we can while we can.”
While Harbaugh admitted he was “heartbroken” to come so close to the Super Bowl and he will “never get over it,” he acknowledged that his team did all that they could while they could.
“We need to continue doing that not just in football — with our families, with our kids, with our friends, all the people that are important to us, in our communities,” Harbaugh said. “Let’s remember where it all begins and where it all ends; that’s important to kind of keep it in perspective. Our team did that all year. We try to do that in our lives. It’s important. It’s the most important thing to me. That’s what it’s all about.”
Harbaugh is known for being outspoken about his faith and reading Bible verses at press conferences.
The Baltimore Ravens have won more games under Harbaugh than ever before at 172. He led Baltimore to the best record in the NFL during the regular season.

What role does Harbaugh’s faith play in his decision-making as a coach?
Told the guys after the game, I said, ‘You know what, at the end of the day, it’s just a game,’” Harbaugh said. “Faith and family, those are the most important things in life. Those are the things that carry us through the toughest times.”
Harbaugh, who has been the Ravens’ head coach since 2008, is known for his strong faith and his ability to lead his team with principles rooted in family values. He believes that faith and family are what truly matter, and that they provide the foundation for success—both on and off the field.
Throughout his coaching career, Harbaugh has emphasized the importance of character and integrity, teaching his players to prioritize their relationships with loved ones and their personal growth in order to succeed in the game of life. He understands that the outcome of a football game is temporary, but the lessons learned from facing adversity with faith and support from family are lasting.
Harbaugh’s faith has played a significant role in his coaching philosophy. He has often shared his belief in the power of prayer and the role it plays in his decision-making as a coach. He has relied on his faith to guide him through the ups and downs of the football season, trusting that there is a greater purpose and plan beyond the game.
In addition to his faith, Harbaugh credits his family for providing the support he needs to excel in his role as a coach. He acknowledges that coaching at such a high level can be demanding and stressful, but having a strong family foundation helps him maintain balance and perspective.
Harbaugh’s wife, Ingrid, and their three children have been a constant source of encouragement and strength for him. They serve as a reminder that there is life beyond football, and that true fulfillment comes from nurturing relationships and being present for his family.
As the Ravens prepare to face off against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LV, Harbaugh remains focused on what truly matters. He understands that winning or losing the game will not define him as a person, but rather his character and the impact he has on others.
While Harbaugh is determined to give his all on the field, he also recognizes the importance of showing grace and gratitude, win or lose. He is appreciative of the opportunity to coach a team he loves and to have the support of his family and faith community.
As Super Bowl Sunday approaches, Harbaugh’s reflections on faith and family serve as a reminder to us all that success is not measured solely by wins and losses. Rather, it is found in the relationships we cultivate, the values we uphold, and the impact we make on the lives of others.
Regardless of the outcome of the game, Harbaugh’s faith and family will remain his guiding force, continually inspiring him to lead with integrity and gratitude. And that, in itself, is a victory worth celebrating.
