Sununu criticized for endorsing Haley: ‘Both are extreme MAGA supporters
The New Hampshire Democratic Party Slams Gov. Chris Sununu’s Endorsement of Nikki Haley
The New Hampshire Democratic Party has strongly criticized Gov. Chris Sununu’s reported plan to endorse former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley for president. In a scathing statement, the party’s chairman, Ray Buckley, labeled both Sununu and Haley as “MAGA extremists.”
“No matter how much Nikki Haley or Chris Sununu try to spin Granite Staters, the reality is they’re both MAGA extremists who spent years cozying up to Donald Trump,” Buckley said. “Let’s be absolutely clear: There’s nothing moderate, reasonable, or electable about their agenda. Granite Staters know the stakes in 2024, and no endorsement is going to save Haley from the massive rejection she’ll face in New Hampshire next year.”
Buckley’s statement further accused Haley of advocating for a nationwide strict abortion ban and criticized her support for Don Bolduc, a former New Hampshire Republican Senate nominee whom Buckley referred to as an “election denier.” Sununu also endorsed Bolduc.
The endorsement is expected to take place at Haley’s town hall in Manchester, New Hampshire, with Sununu in attendance. While the governor’s office did not confirm the endorsement to the Washington Examiner, it did confirm Sununu’s presence.
Sununu has been actively participating in campaign events for various Republican candidates in New Hampshire, including Haley, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Despite his significant lead in both national and New Hampshire polls, Sununu ruled out endorsing Trump for the nomination last week, maintaining that Trump won’t be the Republican nominee.
Haley currently holds second place in New Hampshire polls with 18.7% of the vote, trailing behind Trump’s 45.7%. Christie is polling in third place at 11.3%, according to RealClearPolitics.
Sununu emphasized that his endorsement decision would be based on identifying a “great leader” for the country, not solely on who could defeat President Joe Biden in 2024. He believes that Haley, DeSantis, and Christie all meet that requirement.
The Granite State’s primary, scheduled for January 23, 2024, will be the first primary of the 2024 election season, following the caucuses in Iowa. DeSantis secured the coveted endorsement of Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) in Iowa last month, where he is polling second.

How does the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s strong reaction to Gov. Sununu’s endorsement of Nikki Haley reflect the growing divide between progressive and conservative factions within the party?
G moderate about either of them, and their policies did not align with the values of the people of New Hampshire.”
The strong condemnation from the New Hampshire Democratic Party highlights the growing divide between the state’s progressive Democratic base and the more conservative faction within the party. While Gov. Sununu has been seen as a relatively moderate Republican in comparison to other prominent figures, his endorsement of Nikki Haley, who is closely associated with the Trump administration, has caused outrage among Democratic supporters.
Nikki Haley served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations under the Trump administration and has been vocal about her support for many of Trump’s policies. Her close ties to the former president and her unwavering loyalty to him have made her a highly controversial figure among Democrats. The New Hampshire Democratic Party’s criticism of Haley as a “MAGA extremist” reflects the party’s concerns about her political views and alignment with the Trump agenda.
The endorsement from Gov. Sununu is particularly significant as New Hampshire holds the first-in-the-nation primary, making it a crucial battleground state for the Democratic presidential candidates. The governor’s support could potentially mobilize a substantial number of Republican voters in favor of Haley’s candidacy. This could pose a significant challenge for the Democratic nominee, who would need strong support from independent voters and moderate Republicans to secure victory in the state.
The New Hampshire Democratic Party’s strong reaction to Gov. Sununu’s endorsement underscores the party’s commitment to progressive values and opposition to the Trump administration’s policies. The party’s statement indicates a determination to distance themselves from any association with the previous administration and its allies. It also serves as a warning to Democratic voters about the potential consequences of supporting candidates who are closely aligned with Trump.
Furthermore, the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s criticism of Gov. Sununu himself suggests a further erosion of trust and cooperation between the two major parties in the state. This growing divide between Democrats and Republicans in New Hampshire mirrors the political polarization seen on a national level, heightened by the contentious Trump presidency.
In light of this controversy, the New Hampshire Democratic Party will likely double down on their efforts to mobilize their base and rally support for their preferred candidate. They will emphasize the need to elect a candidate who represents the progressive values of the state and who is committed to undoing the policies of the Trump era.
Ultimately, Gov. Sununu’s endorsement of Nikki Haley has sparked fierce criticism from the New Hampshire Democratic Party. The party’s strong reaction reflects their commitment to progressive values and their opposition to the Trump administration. As the primary elections draw closer, it remains to be seen how this endorsement will impact the political landscape in New Hampshire and the broader Democratic race for the presidency.
