Study finds armed individuals effectively stop active shooter situations.

A New Study Reveals the Effectiveness of “Good Guys with Guns” in Stopping Active Shooter Situations

A groundbreaking study has uncovered significant errors in FBI active shooter reports, leading to a serious undercounting of instances where a “good guy with a ⁣gun” has intervened to prevent or minimize the‌ damage caused by‌ an active shooting.

The report from the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) reveals that armed civilians have actually stopped attacks at a much higher rate than the FBI’s ‍reported 4.6 percent.

In fact, in incidents that occurred outside of “gun-free zones,” an astonishing 63 percent of attacks were halted by legally armed citizens last year.

From 2014 to 2022, the actual number‍ of active shooters stopped by armed ⁢civilians stood at 35.7 percent, nearly eight times higher than the FBI’s figure.

The CPRC concludes that “law-abiding citizens ⁣stopping these attacks are not rare.”

According to Carl Moody, the CPRC’s research director, the data compiled by the CPRC shows that armed citizens‍ have‌ not accidentally shot innocent bystanders.

The Discrepancy Between FBI and CPRC Numbers

So why is there such a significant difference between the FBI and CPRC‌ numbers?

According to the CPRC, the FBI’s definition of‌ active shooter incidents excludes those related ⁤to other criminal⁣ activities, such as robberies or disputes over drug turf.

The CPRC also highlights that the ‍FBI failed to acknowledge‌ civilian involvement⁣ in some incidents and misidentified civilians in others.

For example, in a 2019 incident at a Texas church, the FBI classified ⁤a parishioner who ⁤stopped a gunman as a security guard, despite the fact ⁤that he was just a member of the church who had volunteered to provide security.

The CPRC points out that the FBI’s numbers are ‌misleading because they ignore the fact ‌that approximately half of these attacks occur in gun-free zones, ⁤where ⁢law-abiding citizens are unable to carry firearms for self-defense.

Between 2014 ‍and 2022, citizens stopped⁤ 104 out of 204 ‍potential or actual mass shootings in ⁤areas ⁣where guns were ⁢allowed, meaning that 51% of attacks were thwarted by individuals‌ legally carrying concealed handguns.

The CPRC concludes that if ‍gun-free⁤ zones were eliminated, more people would ⁣be able‌ to‌ intervene and prevent these attacks.

Despite ⁤the⁤ CPRC’s findings, the FBI has not responded to inquiries regarding its active shooter numbers.

Nevertheless, the corrected data debunks the notion that incidents like these are rarely stopped by a “good guy ⁤with a gun.”
