Stimulus check update: Final direct payment worth up to $400 to be paid to Massachusetts residents in seven days

Recipients of a food and utility subsidy program in Chelsea, Massachusetts, will receive their final payment, worth up to $400, in one week.

Payments ranging from $200 to $400 will be given to 738 selected households on May 15. The funds are meant to subsidize food and utility bill payments. A Chelsea city spokesperson told the Washington Examiner that the funds would be loaded on recipients’ debit cards, which were issued in early March.

The amount issued depends on how many people are in the household. A household of one will receive $200, a household of two will receive $300, and a household of three or more will receive $400.

Recipients were chosen through a lottery system, and economically challenged households were given priority.

“Recipients of the program will be chosen using a lottery system,” the program’s website reads. “City staff is reviewing applications and giving preferences to applicants with children under 18, disabled residents, veterans, seniors over 65, families who are ineligible for other forms of federal assistance, families with a female-identifying head of household, and families with a member with a marginalized gender identity.”

To be eligible, families had to have been residents of Chelsea and had a household income 30% less than the area median. Households of one would have to make below $29,450, and households of two would have to make below $33,650 to be part of the program. The amount increased for each additional member of the household.

The first payment was issued on March 15, and the final payment will be issued on May 15. The spokesperson informed the Washington Examiner that the program will be discontinued after the final payment.
