Is Talk Radio in Danger?

No Single Show Can Replace Rush Limbaugh

For millions of conservative listeners, talk radio is a daily staple. It exploded in popularity in the late ’80s after the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine, which had effectively silenced conservative voices on TV and radio. Rush Limbaugh led the way, and many have followed in his footsteps, including Mark Levin, Dana Loesch, and Steve Deace.

But now, talk radio may be in danger. Automakers like Ford are removing AM radio from new and updated models, and Democrats in Washington are pushing for the transition to FM and other options. While streaming and digital options offer convenience and choice, they can’t replace the reach, immediacy, and locality of AM radio.

The Impact on Local and Minority Voices

Out of the 49 AM stations in the Los Angeles area, 27 are minority voices. In the Dallas-Fort Worth megalopolis, 23 out of 43 AM stations are minority voices, religious programming, or both. These small stations may not have the resources to develop mobile apps or compete with larger podcasts, leaving them squeezed out of the market.
