Two “Squad” Democrats Reject Resolution Honoring Fallen Police Officers

Democratic Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Cori Bush Stand Alone in Opposition

On Monday, a resolution to support “National Police Week” passed with overwhelming support in the House of Representatives, with a vote of 413-2. However, two members of the far-left “Squad” Democrats, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Cori Bush of Missouri, were the only lawmakers to vote against it.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Tlaib and Bush claimed that the resolution pushed a “false narrative” and was “not a referendum on support for the safety of first responders.” They accused Republicans of using the document to advance their own agenda and gaslight the public.

The resolution honored the 556 law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty, but Tlaib and Bush brought up the events of January 6, 2021, as a reason to justify their rejection. They claimed that Republicans were actively targeting agencies that uphold the law and hold former President Donald Trump accountable for his actions.

Defunding the Police

Both Tlaib and Bush have been vocal supporters of defunding the police. Bush has frequently expressed her support for the movement, stating that “defunding the police has to happen” and that the money should be redirected to social safety nets. Tlaib has also made comments critical of law enforcement, calling policing in the U.S. “intentionally racist” and advocating for an end to policing, incarceration, and militarization.

The vote comes on the heels of reports that the “Squad” has spent a combined $1 million on private security, despite their calls to defund the police.
