Spring training roundup: Jake Woodford, Cards shut out Marlins

The St. Louis Cardinals hosted the Miami Marlins Monday and came away with a 5-0 victory in Jupiter, Florida. Jake Woodford started on the mound for the Cardinals and pitched five shutout innings, striking out seven batters. Meanwhile, Miami’s Daniel Castano also recorded five scoreless innings. The Cardinals pulled ahead in the sixth inning, scoring four runs, including one driven in by Nolan Gorman, who finished 1-for-3 on the day. Gorman has been one of the keys to the Cardinals’ success in Spring Training, having hit two home runs in his last two games. He hit a two-run homer on Sunday in the Cardinals’ 8-7 victory over the New York Mets.

Kevin Gausman pitched five shutout innings, recording six strikeouts, as the visiting Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-0 in Lakeland, Florida. Devonte Brown’s three-run homer in the ninth inning sealed the victory for the Blue Jays.

In another game, the Atlanta Braves outlasted the Tampa Bay Rays in a 6-5 victory in North Port, Florida. Marcell Ozuna had a perfect day at the plate for the Braves, recording three hits and two runs. Yandy Diaz and Taylor Walls each hit a home run and had one other hit for Tampa Bay. In yet another game, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the hosting Boston Red Sox 7-5 in Fort Myers, Florida, with Canaan Smith-Njigba leading the way with three hits and two RBIs. Rafael Devers had one hit and scored one run for the Red Sox.

In Clearwater, Florida, the Philadelphia Phillies routed the Baltimore Orioles 14-6, with Rhys Hoskins having a stellar game, registering a homer, a double, two runs, and four RBIs. Hoskins’ homer on this day was a two-run shot in the second inning. He has been impressive throughout Spring Training so far, hitting four home runs in 31 at-bats for a .355 batting average. Meanwhile, Gunnar Henderson hit a three-run homer for the Orioles, but it was not enough to overcome the Phillies’ 15-hit barrage.
