“Spider-Man: No Way Home” star Tom Holland recently discussed his struggle with alcohol dependency and how he’s been doing since getting sober. 

Finding Sobriety and Overcoming Addiction

In a recent episode of the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast, Holland shared his journey towards sobriety. He revealed that he started his path to recovery after a particularly boozy Christmas last year. Inspired by the popular trend of “Dry January,” where individuals abstain from alcohol for the entire month, the actor realized the extent of his dependency.

“All I could think about was having a drink. It really scared me,” the 27-year-old actor said during the interview. “I just was like, ‘Wow, maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing.”

Deciding to extend his sobriety beyond one month, Holland faced additional challenges.

“I felt like I couldn’t be social,” Holland said. “I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn’t go out for dinner. I was really, really struggling. I just sort of said to myself, like, ‘Why? Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?’”

However, his determination led him to set a goal of six months without drinking, and the result was life-changing.

“I could sleep better. I could handle problems better,” he said. “Things that would go wrong on set, that would normally set me off, I could take in my stride. I had such better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter. I’m happy to say it – I was definitely addicted to alcohol. I’m not shying away from that at all.”

Inspiring Others to Embrace Sobriety

Holland’s decision to give up alcohol has had a positive impact on those around him. He shared that his mom also chose sobriety after witnessing his transformation.

“She’s loving it, and it’s been amazing,” Holland said during the podcast interview. “I can’t believe the difference that I feel from not drinking. Yeah, I feel amazing.”
