Speaker Johnson supports Mayra Flores for a crucial rematch in a House race
Exclusive: Speaker Mike Johnson Endorses Mayra Flores in High-Stakes House Race
In a pivotal House race that could reshape the balance of power, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is throwing his support behind Mayra Flores in her highly anticipated rematch against Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX). This endorsement has the potential to tip the scales in the lower chamber next year.
Johnson Backs Flores as the Best Republican Candidate
Johnson, in his endorsement, praised Flores as the strongest Republican contender to secure the fiercely contested seat, which boasts a significant Hispanic voting population. Flores, who previously served in Congress after winning a special election, was unfortunately ousted when she ran against Gonzalez in the 2022 midterm elections.
“Mayra Flores made history last year by becoming the first Mexican-born woman elected to the U.S. House, and I am excited to fully endorse her candidacy in Texas’ 34th Congressional District,” Johnson said in a statement. “Mayra’s strong conservative message of God, Family, & Country has resonated with voters from all walks of life who no longer identify with the current radicalism of the Democrats. We need Mayra back in Congress so she can help our Republican majority secure the border, rein in government overreach, and restore fiscal sanity in Washington.”
Johnson is not only endorsing Flores but also adding her to his new joint fundraising committee, Grow the Majority, which will provide substantial financial support to her reelection campaign. Flores has already raised an impressive $860,000 in donations between July and September, surpassing the $858,314 raised by Gonzalez during the first three quarters of 2023, according to campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
The endorsement comes as Flores and Gonzalez gear up for a highly anticipated rematch in one of the most fiercely contested House seats of the 2024 cycle. In the previous election, Gonzalez narrowly defeated Flores by a mere 8 points. Recent polling commissioned by the National Republican Congressional Committee shows the two candidates neck and neck in a head-to-head matchup.
Gonzalez, who is a prime target for House Republicans in the upcoming cycle, remains confident in his incumbency despite the endorsement. He points out that Flores must first navigate a crowded primary before facing him for the House seat. The primary field includes four other Republicans: Laura Cisneros, Mauro Garza, Gregory Kunkle Jr., and Ann Marie Torres.
“That’s great news,” Gonzalez responded to Johnson’s endorsement. “We beat her by 9 points in what many anticipated would be a red wave midterm election. We hope she can garner enough support to win her crowded primary. This will make things a lot easier for us in November.”
Flores initially won the traditionally Democratic House district along the southern border with Mexico in a surprising upset against Democrat Dan Sanchez. However, she later lost in the general election after the district was redrawn in a way that favored Democrats.
All eyes are on the 2024 elections as Republicans strive to maintain their slim majority in the lower chamber. Out of the 435 seats up for grabs, 45 are considered competitive, with the majority held by Democrats. This gives the GOP a slight advantage as they prepare for the next election cycle. However, it’s worth noting that of the 45 competitive seats, 17 are held by Republicans in districts that voted for President Joe Biden in 2020, compared to just five Democrats defending their seats in districts carried by former President Donald Trump. This means there are enough vulnerable GOP-held seats to keep the competition fierce heading into the next election cycle.

How does the historical swing nature of the Texas 34th Congressional District impact the significance of the 2024 election cycle?
E 2024 election cycle. The Texas 34th Congressional District is historically a swing district, making it a prime target for both parties. The outcome of this race could have significant implications for the balance of power in the House of Representatives.
Flores has wasted no time in capitalizing on the Speaker’s endorsement. She has been actively campaigning and engaging with voters across the district, focusing on issues such as border security, government overreach, and fiscal responsibility. Her strong conservative message has resonated with voters who feel disillusioned by the current state of radicalism within the Democratic Party.
Gonzalez, on the other hand, is not taking the endorsement lightly. He is determined to defend his seat and continue advocating for his constituents in Congress. He has also been actively fundraising, but the endorsement of Speaker Johnson gives Flores a significant advantage in terms of financial support.
The race between Flores and Gonzalez is expected to be intense and closely watched. Both candidates have their own dedicated base of supporters, and now with the Speaker’s backing, Flores has the momentum and resources to mount a formidable challenge.
The Hispanic voting population in the district will play a crucial role in deciding the outcome of this race.
