Spain border crisis could ‘ultimately break up the EU’: Hugo Gurdon

Gurdon highlighted the ongoing influx of thousands of immigrants crossing into Spain, especially through Ceuta, which many view as an easy crossing point due to lax border controls. He argued that Spanish voters have not had a say in these border policies and compared the situation to socialism and open-border sentiments supported by U.S. socialist candidates. Gurdon praised former U.S.President Donald Trump’s efforts to secure borders and warned that Europe’s open-border policies could fracture the EU, noting countries like Italy are already reevaluating their commitments to the free movement agreement. He emphasized that the EU’s core principle of free movement of people is compromised by uncontrolled entries, risking the union’s stability.

“They’re led by one government after another from different parties, and none of them seems to be strong enough or determined enough,” Gurdon said Tuesday on Fox News’s Fox and Friends. “None of them has the will to make sure that Europe is kept for the Europeans.”

“Day after day, month after month, masses, thousands of immigrants, are coming in,” Gurdon said.
Thousands of migrants rushed to Spain’s border last week. Dozens died during the crossing, with officials saying migrants were accessing Ceuta, the Spanish port, both by land through the Moroccan border and by swimming across the Strait of Gibraltar.
Ceuta is likely seen as an easy entry point due to its more relaxed border restrictions and its proximity to the Spanish mainland.
Gurdon argued that Spanish voters did not have a say in border restrictions.
“They are very frustrated because they have never said that they want all of these immigrants, they have never been asked, they have never voted for it,” Gurdon said.
Gurdon compared the issue to socialism, saying that U.S. socialist candidates support open-border policies.
“Socialism is an international movement,” Gurdon said.
Gurdon praised President Donald Trump’s efforts to secure the U.S. border, arguing that Europe is now experiencing the consequences of open-border policies.

“This could ultimately break up the EU,” Gurdon said, as countries such as Italy have announced suspensions on its free-travel pact with Spain, according to Fox News.
“One of the core ideas of the European Union is that there should be free movement of goods and people,” Gurdon said. “Well, you can’t have free movement of people if there are total foreigners crossing the border without permission and they’re being let in by countries like Spain.”
