Socialists’ Trojan horse plan for Congress: Sarah Bedford
Sarah Bedford, investigations editor at the Washington Examiner, warns of a new wave of socialists reshaping the Democratic Party by emphasizing economic populism rather than cultural issues. She notes that this movement is focused on economic messaging that appeals to working people and avoids controversial social topics, making it harder for Republicans to criticize. Bedford suggests these candidates pose a different challenge than previous progressive efforts and may serve as a “Trojan horse” for more radical leftist policies, including social issues, which thay do not highlight publicly. Recent primary victories, such as Melat Kiros defeating incumbent Democrat Diana DeGette in Colorado, exemplify this shift. Bedford argues that this strategy could complicate Democratic leadership’s ability to control the party’s direction as insurgent candidates distance themselves from establishment figures.
Washington Examiner investigations editor Sarah Bedford warned that there’s a new wave of socialists reshaping the Democratic Party, not by leading with controversial cultural issues, but by focusing exclusively on economic populism.
“It’s a huge problem for Democrats, but I would say that Republicans should take this threat seriously,” Bedford said on the Hugh Hewitt Show Wednesday. “There’s a reason why the socialists are surging in popularity.”

Bedford’s comments come in the wake of a string of high-profile primary victories by candidates on its left flank, including New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Melot Kiros, who was victorious against incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District on Tuesday. Kiros led with 58,337 votes, while DeGette followed behind with 51,459 votes.
Bedford argued that these candidates represent a different political challenge than the progressive movement of just a few years ago. The Democratic Socialists of America believe working people should democratically run the economy and society so that human needs can be met for all.
“They’re really relentlessly focused on economic messaging. They’re not saying crazy stuff about politics that immediately alienates people,” Bedford said. “I do think that’s gonna make it harder for the right to attack them, because their messaging is almost purely economic, it’s not social.”
Bedford said that the movement is creating headaches for some Democratic leadership, particularly as some insurgent candidates openly distance themselves from establishment figures.

Bedford also suggested that the left’s messaging strategy could serve as a “Trojan horse” for broader ideological goals.
“Even though, obviously they do share a lot of those super lefty views on social issues, it’s not central to what they’re selling to voters right now, and they’re probably going to Trojan horse those far-left views into Congress,” she said.
