On the first day each month, the Social Security Administration issues one monthly SSI Check. To ensure recipients have their checks by the first business day of each month, however, the agency will not release checks on a holiday or weekend.

The recipient receives two checks per calendar month, but receives a total 12 payments each year.

The payment is also available to eligible couples. They will be entitled to two payments of $1.371 each in March. Two checks of $458 each will be sent to essential people who are those who live with someone on SSI.

This year, three other months will be subject to two payments: June, September and December. Because the first month falls on a weekend between July and October, this is why you will see two payments. Due to Jan. 1, a national holiday in the United States, December gets two checks per year.

The Social Security Administration issued the first SSI payments in January 1974. Since 1975, the agency has reported that the rates for cost-of living adjustments have increased each year.
