Possible rewrite: Two SSI payments possible in June due to Social Security update.

Double Paycheck for Supplemental Security Income Recipients in June

Supplemental Security Income recipients will be receiving two paychecks in June because of a quirk in the Social Security Administration’s schedule.

Exciting news for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients! In June, they will receive two paychecks instead of one. The payments, worth $914 for individual filers and $1,371 for eligible couples, will be disbursed on Thursday, June 1, and Friday, June 30. But wait, there’s more! The second payment will replace July’s check, ensuring that recipients still receive their payments by the first of the month, even though July 1 falls on a weekend.

Who Else is Eligible for SSI Payments?

Essential persons, those who live with people receiving SSI payments and provide them with necessary care, also get a monthly payment of $458, according to the SSA.

There are four months when SSI recipients will receive two checks this year: March, June, September, and December. They will not get checks in April, July, October, or January 2024. This is because the first of the month falls on a weekend or a holiday in April, July, and October. January 1 is always a holiday.

The adjusted schedule ensures that all recipients still receive 12 payments each year. If a recipient does not receive the payment on schedule, the SSA recommends filers allow three business days before reaching out to the federal agency.

What is SSI?

SSI payments are given on top of regular Social Security retirement benefits. The program provides monthly payments to adults and children with blindness or another disability and limited income. To qualify for SSI, a person has to be over 65, be totally or partially blind, or have a “physical or mental condition(s) that very seriously limits their daily activities for a period of 12 months or more or may be expected to result in death.”

When are Social Security Retirement Payments Disbursed?

Social Security retirement payments are disbursed in three waves, with each wave divided up by 10-day blocks that coincide with the month the recipient was born. They are distributed on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

SSI payments were first issued by the SSA in January 1974, and payment rates have increased for cost-of-living adjustments since 1975, according to the agency.
