Social Security update: $914 direct payment arriving Friday.

Recipients of the Social Security Administration’s Supplemental Security Income Program Receive Double Payment in June

On Friday, recipients of the Social Security Administration’s Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program received an exciting surprise – a second payment for the month of June. This additional payment, worth up to $914 for individual filers, is part of a unique scheduling quirk.

The payment is the second of two checks for the month of June. It will take the place of July’s payment because of a kink in the Social Security Administration’s calendar. The initial payment was sent on June first.

Ensuring 12 Checks per Year

Typically, SSI recipients receive one payment each month. However, in months where the first of the following month falls on a weekend, they receive two checks. This adjustment ensures that recipients still receive 12 checks per year, even though the distribution may vary.

This year, there are four months in which two payments will be delivered in the same month: March, June, September, and December. This is due to the first of the month falling on a weekend in April, July, and October, with January 1 always being a holiday.

Varying Payment Amounts

The amount of money each beneficiary receives varies depending on their filing status. Individuals filing individually can receive a maximum of $914 per month. Eligible couples can receive up to $1,371, while essential persons, who provide necessary care to SSI recipients, receive a monthly payment of $458.

To qualify for SSI, individuals must be over 65 and meet specific financial requirements. They may also qualify if they are partially blind or have physical or mental conditions that significantly limit their daily activities for at least 12 months or are expected to result in death.

It’s important to note that SSI payments are separate from regular Social Security benefits and are specifically designed to support adults and children with blindness or disabilities and limited income.

Since its inception in January 1974, SSI payment rates have increased for cost-of-living adjustments, providing crucial support to those in need.
