A small airplane crashed into Beijing’s tallest building, the 109-story CITIC Tower (also known as China Zun), causing a visible gash several floors down. The incident occurred on Friday, drawing a large police presence and emergency response. Bystander videos verified by the New York Times captured debris falling from the collision as people scrambled to safety, with witnesses describing the noise as louder than fireworks. the tower, completed in 2018 and standing over 1,760 feet tall, sustained surface damage.The Chinese authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the event.


A small airplane crashed into Beijing’s tallest building on Friday, sending debris falling into the street below.

The aircraft flew into China’s 109-story CITIC Tower, located in the central business district of Beijing, drawing a large police presence to the streets and the area surrounding the tower below. A gash in the side of the building, several floors down from the top of the tower, is visible in images from the Associated Press.

A video circulating on social media, taken by bystanders on the street, shows the aircraft debris falling from the collision site as people on the ground run to safety. The video was verified by outlets such as the New York Times.

The Chinese government and local emergency response authorities have not yet issued an official comment on the collision.

A bystander told Reuters that the collision “was so loud — louder than fireworks.”

The skyscraper, also called “China Zun” stands over 1,760 feet tall, and was completed in 2018.
