Slack Introduces AI to Boost Workplace Efficiency

Slack, the workplace communications company owned by Salesforce, has announced the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its platform. The move is aimed at helping workers handle information more efficiently and effectively. The new initiative, called Slack GPT, includes a range of generative AI tools and applications built into the platform. Users will be able to access ChatGPT, the popular mass-market AI system from OpenAI, and Claude, an AI assistant launched by Anthropic, to complete tasks relevant to their jobs.

Revolutionizing the Way We Work

According to Slack CEO Lidiane Jones, “Generative AI has enormous potential to redefine how work is done.” Slack GPT enables AI to act on valuable data from a company’s most trusted resource: its own internal knowledge. The platform will allow workers to build custom processes based on generative AI without writing computer code. For example, sales employees could construct an application that instantly combines sales leads with customer data to draft a personalized prospecting email.

Boosting Productivity

Generative AI has already been proven to significantly boost the productivity of knowledge workers. One analysis of customer support employees showed that an AI system helped employees respond to 14% more chats than their colleagues who did not have access to the system. Amazon, which released several mass-market AI solutions last month, found that coders who used AI computer programming tool CodeWhisperer finished tasks 57% faster than those who did not use the system and were 27% more likely to achieve success.

Concerns Over Technological Unemployment

While many knowledge workers stand to gain from ChatGPT and similar tools through increased productivity, white-collar industries are the most likely to see widespread technological unemployment as a result of generative AI developments. One recent forecast from Goldman Sachs estimated that AI could eliminate 7% of positions in the United States, largely in sectors that rely on office work such as administrative support and legal, while positions in sectors such as construction and logistics are forecasted to remain broadly intact.
