Six People Arrested At South Carolina Demonstration Following SCOTUS Abortion Ruling

Six people were arrested during a demonstration in downtown Greenville, South Carolina, on Saturday following the Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade.

The Greenville Police Department said more than 400 people had gathered during the afternoon event in One City Plaza, where pro-life and pro-abortion demonstrators stood on opposite sides of the street.

“‘On several occasions, officers had to address people in the roadway and parties from one side trying to go over to another,’” the department said.

The six individuals were arrested with charges that included interfering with police, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest, according to the report.

Fox Carolina added that the charges also included pedestrians blocking a roadway.

“‘The picket was deemed an unlawful assembly, and officers dispersed both sides,’” the department added.

The event was deemed as violating the city’s picketing ordinance to stay “on the sidewalks, on the grounds of a city-controlled park or plaza, or in other city-owned areas or rights-of-way normally used or reserved for pedestrian movement, and may not be conducted on the portion of a street used primarily for vehicular traffic.”

“We have received a few videos from people involved and onlookers,” the police department said, according to ABC-13 News. Law enforcement said authorities did not use pepper spray or discharge tasers.

The incident is one of several protests and acts of civil disobedience following the 6-3 decision in Dobbs v.s. JacksonWomen’s Health Organization on Friday.

The ruling followed the early May leak of a draft opinion that led to multiple demonstrations at the homes of Supreme Court justices and acts of vandalism at pro-life centers and houses of worship.

In Los Angeles, protesters blocked the 110 freeway, shutting down traffic on Friday and clashing with law enforcement officials.

“‘The crowds have dispersed and the flow of traffic has been restored,’” the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement. “‘The tactical alert has been cancelled and we have resumed standard operations. We want to thank the men and women who worked long hours to ensure citizens were able to exercise their 1st Amendment right.’”

On Saturday, in Lynchburg, Virginia, police responded to a vandalism attack on a pro-life center. The Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center was marked with graffiti on its entrance area that read, “If abortion ain’t safe, you ain’t safe.”

Multiple windows had also reportedly been broken, with security cameras capturing footage of four masked people involved in the vandalism.

Some of the violent responses since the May Supreme Court leak have been claimed by a group called Jane’s Revenge. The movement released a recent manifesto calling for “action” against the pro-life movement.

Prior to the court’s ruling, Jane’s Revenge claimed responsibility on Tuesday for a vandalism incident that included breaking the front door and shattering the windows of an office building shared by a pro-life organization and a Michigan Republican’s campaign office.

Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) said in a statement, “these criminals spray-painted a message signaling they were a part of a pro-abortion group called Jane’s Revenge.”
