Seventy Churches in Georgia Split From United Methodist Church Over LGBTQ Issues

Seventy churches within Georgia split from the Usa Methodist Church (UMC) a week ago largely over LGBTQ problems, marking the latest in an expanding divide within the particular third-largest Protestant denomination in the United States.

The North Atlanta Conference voted last Thursday night to allow the churches, the majority of which were in rural locations, to disaffiliate from the UMC. The process for disaffiliation has been laid out by the 2019 Common Conference of The United Methodist Church through 2023, based on the North Georgia United Methodist Church Conference website.

In 2021, the particular Board of Trustees followed a process and, along with Region Superintendents, walked alongside the particular churches that requested in order to disaffiliate. The conference set up ratification by the Annual Meeting as the final step in that will process.

The 70 church buildings that chose to disaffiliate represent 9% for the congregations in the Conference and even 3% of the membership, based on the denomination. The date connected with disaffiliation will be effective 06 30, 2022.
