“Sensitivity Experts” Rewrite Roald Dahl Books to Remove Language They Find Offensive
Roald Dahl is probably familiar to you if you have children. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s Matilda, Matilda and The BFG are just a few of the many books he wrote for children. James and the Giant Peach is another. I was a reader of some of his books as a child and have since seen the movies that are based on them.
We bought a boxed set Dahl’s children’s books for my son when he was in elementary school.This is the oneI was able to read them to him, before he could read them. Dahl also wrote great stories for adults, as well as a few screenplays, including the script for James Bond’s favorite movie. You Only Live Once. In my house, we are huge fans of his work.
Yesterday Telegraph Dahl’s children books were rewritten with the goal of removing any offensive language. Found offensive.
“Words matter,” This is the brief notice that appears at the bottom on the copyright page for Puffin’s latest Roald Dahl editions. “The wonderful words of Roald Dahl can transport you to different worlds and introduce you to the most marvellous characters. This book was written many years ago, and so we regularly review the language to ensure that it can continue to be enjoyed by all today.”
Simply put, these words may not be Dahl’s. The editors have the right to alter, delete, and add to Dahl’s books as they wish, so that they can be edited by them. The Telegraph discovered hundreds of changes in Dahl’s stories by comparing the most recent editions to earlier versions.
The language relating to race, weight, mental health, violence and gender has been rewritten. Remember the Cloud-Men of James and the Giant Peach, the Cloud-Men? They are now called the Cloud-People. Fantastic Mr Fox’s Small Foxes are now female. Matilda has been updated to include Rudyard Kipling’s mention. Jane Austen was also added. It’s Roald Dahl, but different.
While the individual changes can be small, they can have a significant impact on your life. Take, for example, the Telegraph His book had 59 changes The Witches.
The Witches is Dahl’s 1982 novel about a young boy who grows up in a world controlled by secretive witches. This passage is also found in the 2001 version. It describes women being yanked out of their hair to determine if they are witches. (Witches are bald and wear gloves to hide their claws in the story.
Many of the edits, which are not surprising given The Witches’ subject material, involve depictions of women. “Chambermaid” It is “cleaner”. “Great flock of ladies” It is “great group of ladies”. “You must be mad, woman!” Gets “You must be out of your mind!” “The old hag” It is “the old crow”.

Dahl rewrote these characters in the 1960s. “de-Negro” They, in his words. Mel Stuart’s 1971 movie starring Gene Wilder saw the Oompas transform into orange-skinned, green-haired figures. The books are not able to function without some adjustments. There is a huge difference between revising the work by the author and having it reviewed by a group. Even after his death, he lived on..
Puffin and Roald Dahl Story Company recently made changes in partnership with Inclusive Minds. The spokesperson for Inclusive Minds describes the changes as “a collective for people who are passionate about inclusion and accessibility in children’s literature”. To help publishers navigate the new waters, organizations such as Inclusive Minds were created.
Alexandra Strick is a co-founder and CEO of Inclusive Minds. “aim to ensure authentic representation, by working closely with the book world and with those who have lived experience of any facet of diversity”. They call upon a team of “Inclusion Ambassadors” With a variety of “lived experience”. She stated that while they mainly work with authors who write now, they are occasionally asked to assist with older texts.
This revision occurred just before Dahl had completed his entire children’s book catalog. Netflix sold In 2021. In 2021, we will see new Dahl series and moves that will help drive sales of the recently revised books.
The striking thing about this is that in the US progressives are experiencing panic over the removal of books in school libraries. Critics and parents have called some of these books pornographic. [embedded content]The left responded by claiming that the right was to a) ban books and b), target LGBT students. Many of the most explicit books are about gay relationships. The question of appropriate material for children doesn’t seem to be raised until a parent reads from them at a school board meeting. The parents are then cut off because the books are too offensive and children are present.
To protect young minds from such concepts, leftist sensibility readers are revising Roald Dahl’s children’s books that are far more well-known and less threatening. “fat.” People who complain about school libraries being banned from reading will be just as upset about PC revisions to famous authors works. We’ll just have to see.
There seem to be two standards in place. There’s one standard that is very serious for leftist sensitives and another that is casually ignored for conservative sensitivities. People with leftist sensibilities can find a job. They could be employed as sensitivity readers by major publishers. However, parents who are conservatively sensitive about exposing young teenagers to depictions or forced sex among children, these sensitivities do not provide work for the left-wing journalists ridiculing them in our newspapers.
