American troops in both countries continue to partner with local forces to combat the Islamic State’s threat and prevent its resurgence.

The terror group was defeated militarily by the Syrian government in 2019. Since then, its leaders are in hiding to avoid being attacked by U.S forces.

ISIS fighters continue to fight in Syria and Iraq at a low level, and ISIS continues to inspire West-based followers to launch violent attacks.

U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish force, with the assistance of U.S. aircraftstrikes were able retake prison after 10 days. It is believed that many hundred ISIS prisoners managed to flee.

Kurdish forces claimed that 374 ISIS terrorists were killed during the attempted escape.

However, the group’s operations were severely affected by the death of Abu Ibrahim alHashimi alQurayshi, also known as Haji Abdullah. This was in February 2022.

The high-risk missions that U.S. special operation forces carry out in Syria are usually directed at ISIS leaders. This is done in order to collect more intelligence.

This includes areas in the far northwestern Syria where ISIS leaders sought refuge.

The Iranian-backed terrorist groups have also threatened the U.S. forces based in Syria, apart from ISIS. They have used drone and rocket attacks on U.S. military bases.
