A baggie of cocaine was discovered in a lobby at the White House last week, but despite a thorough investigation by the FBI, no fingerprints or DNA were found on the baggie, according to a summary of the Secret Service investigation obtained by The Associated Press.
The investigation has hit a dead end, with no leads on who brought the drugs into the building, the summary revealed.
The baggie of white powder was found during a routine sweep of the heavily trafficked West Wing lobby on July 2. This area is frequented by staff members and tour groups who drop off their belongings.
Secret Service officials stated in the summary that without physical evidence, it will be impossible to identify a person of interest from the hundreds of individuals who passed through the area where the cocaine was discovered.
The presence of cocaine at the White House has sparked criticism and questions from Republicans, who have requested a briefing on the investigation.
President Joe Biden has expressed his belief that it is “incredibly important” for the Secret Service to uncover how the drugs ended up in the White House. However, he was not present at the time of the discovery as he was at Camp David with his family for the holiday weekend.
Speculation on social media has suggested that the cocaine may have been brought in by Hunter Biden, the president’s son, who has written about his struggles with addiction. However, there is no evidence to support this claim.

As a precaution, the White House complex was briefly evacuated when the white powder was found. The substance was tested on the spot by the fire department to determine if it was hazardous. The initial test came back negative for a biohazard but positive for cocaine.

The baggie of cocaine underwent further testing at Homeland Security’s National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center to check for any biothreats. The tests came back negative, confirming that the substance was not a biological threat.
The cocaine and its packaging were also subjected to advanced fingerprint and DNA analysis at the FBI’s crime laboratory. Chemical testing was conducted as well.
Meanwhile, Secret Service investigators compiled a list of several hundred individuals who may have had access to the area where the drugs were found. However, the lab results did not yield any latent fingerprints or DNA, making it impossible to compare them to the potential suspect pool. It is worth noting that White House staff members are fingerprinted, while participants in tour groups are not.
Surveillance footage from the lobby entrance did not provide any solid leads or identify the person responsible, according to the Secret Service.
The lobby is open for staff-led tours of the West Wing during nonworking hours on weekends and evenings. These tours are invitation-only and led by White House staff for friends, family, and other guests. While most staffers can request a tour slot, there is often a long waitlist. Tours were conducted on the day the drugs were found, as well as on the two preceding days.
