Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell will face off against left-wing activist and organizer Katie Wilson in the city’s mayoral election in November.

According to reports, Wilson was leading the incumbent in the early returns of Tuesday’s primary election in Seattle by a slight margin of 46.4% to 45%. Election returns showed five candidates received at least 1% of the vote in Tuesday’s primary, with the top two candidates advancing to the election in November. Harrell and Wilson both received over 45% of the vote, with the next closest candidate receiving just 5%.

Harrell was elected Seattle’s mayor in 2021, succeeding Jenny Durkan, who made the infamous “summer of love” comment during the city’s riots in June 2020. He previously served as a member of Seattle’s City Council from 2008 to 2020 and as its president from 2016 to 2020.

“My re-election [sic] is supported by 100+ current and former elected officials, labor, as well as affordable housing, environmental, community, and transportation leaders,” Harrell posted on his social media accounts. “I’m proud of the broad and diverse coalition we’ve built to keep Seattle moving forward.”

Wilson is a left-wing activist, community organizer, co-founder, and executive director of the Transit Riders Union, “an independent, democratic, member-run union of transit riders organizing for better public transit” in Seattle and other nearby areas. She has advocated for many causes, including hikes in minimum wage, increased renters’ protections, and improved public transit access. Her political platform features initiatives for “climate action and environmental justice” and “Trump-proofing” Seattle.

Her agenda and initiatives have drawn comparisons to New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

“Tonight, we got results that were even better than we hoped, and it’s likely to only get better,” Wilson posted on her X account. “Seattle, you showed up! It’s clear that voters want change. This is your city. Join the campaign, and let’s get this done!”

Harrell will go for his second term, while Wilson will go for the political upset in Seattle’s general election on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
