Sean Duffy’s son-in-law wins GOP House primary in Wisconsin
Michael Alfonso, son-in-law of transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, won the republican primary in Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District, with 48% of the vote. Supported by Donald Trump’s endorsement,Alfonso is favored to win the seat in the November election,especially as the district heavily favors Trump in 2024. Alfonso faced four competitors including Kevin Hermening, Jessi Ebben, Niina Threlfall-Baum, and Don Raihala.He grew up in the district and graduated from the university of Wisconsin-Madison. At just 26 years old, Alfonso would be the youngest member of Congress and would succeed Duffy, who previously held the seat from 2011 to 2019. His campaign faced accusations of nepotism and concerns over his age and experience, with prior jobs in construction and podcast production. Duffy actively supported Alfonso’s campaign, including transferring $1 million to a super PAC. The primary victory comes after recent campaigning events, including a tele-rally attended by Trump.The seat became open after Rep. Tom Tiffany ran for governor,which he won the Republican nomination for.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s son-in-law, Michael Alfonso, won the crowded Republican primary in Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District.
Alfonso, powered by President Donald Trump’s endorsement, had secured 48% of the votes when the Associated Press called the race at 10:16 p.m. with 40% of ballots counted. The district voted for Trump in 2024 by a more than 20-point margin, making Alfonso the odds-on favorite in November.

Alfonso faced four other Republicans in the primary: financial adviser Kevin Hermening, Ashley Furniture director Jessi Ebben, business owner Niina Threlfall-Baum, and real estate broker Don Raihala. Alfonso grew up in the district and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Duffy’s son-in-law would be the youngest member of Congress at 26 years old. Alfonso would be taking over Duffy’s former seat, and the transportation secretary was active in campaigning alongside him. Duffy also transferred $1 million from his old campaign account to a super PAC supporting Alfonso. Duffy held the seat from 2011 until 2019.
The 26-year-old faced accusations of nepotism from his opponents, and they also said he was too young and inexperienced for the job. He previously held jobs in construction and as a producer on former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino’s podcast.
Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL) is currently the youngest member of Congress at 29, but he was elected at age 25 in 2022.

The Wisconsin Republican was joined by the president in a tele-rally on Monday ahead of his Tuesday primary. Trump attended Alfonso’s wedding to Duffy’s daughter, Evita.
The seat became open after Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) launched a bid for governor. Tiffany won the Republican nomination for the governorship on Tuesday night.
