Schumer forums tackle workforce and high-risk industries.
The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Job Market and High-Risk Industries
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) hosted a pair of engaging AI insight forums, putting the spotlight on the influence of artificial intelligence on the job market and high-risk industries. These forums aimed to provide his fellow senators with a comprehensive understanding of this rapidly evolving technology. Over two dozen experts were invited to answer questions from attendees, making it an informative and interactive event.
These forums, the third and fourth in a series announced by Schumer over the summer, were strategically designed to expedite the drafting of legislation. The goal is to establish guardrails for AI technology in the near future, ensuring both its potential for good and addressing any potential gaps that may arise.

According to Jason Oxton, CEO of the Information Technology Industry Council, the Senate showed a deep interest in exploring the potential of AI while also addressing any concerns. Oxton, one of the speakers at the second session, highlighted the Senate’s commitment to understanding the benefits and risks associated with AI.
Although the event primarily drew staffers due to senators’ voting commitments, the second session was attended by Schumer, along with Senators Mike Rounds (R-SD), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), and Todd Young (R-IN), as well as an estimated 10 other members over an extended period.
The first event, held on Wednesday morning, featured prominent figures such as Allyson Knox, Microsoft’s Washington, D.C., education policy head, Chris Hyams, CEO of Indeed, and Michael Fraccaro, an executive at Mastercard. The event also included experts from different political perspectives, including Michael R. Strain from the conservative-leaning American Enterprise Institute and Patrick Gaspard, president of the left-leaning Center for American Progress.
After the event, Schumer emphasized the importance of worker input and ensuring that AI technology remains worker-friendly. He stressed the need for human involvement in tasks such as generating work schedules and financial charts, emphasizing that AI should not completely replace employees.
The second event focused on ”high impact” issues, such as finance, healthcare, and the mitigation of potential harms associated with AI development and deployment. Notable speakers included Hoan Ton-That, CEO of Clearview AI, Margaret Mitchell, Chief Ethics Officer of Hugging Face, and Tulsee Doshi, Google’s Director for Responsible AI.
While the panel discussed various topics, the primary focus was on safeguarding finance, healthcare, and critical infrastructure like energy and water from potential AI-related risks.
Ton-That’s presence at the event sparked controversy due to concerns about Clearview AI’s privacy breaches in training AI on public faces without consent. Evan Greer, director of the left-leaning tech advocacy group Fight for the Future, criticized the decision, stating that inviting Clearview to a discussion on regulating AI was akin to inviting an arsonist to a fire safety meeting. Clearview AI did not respond to requests for comment, and Schumer did not address questions regarding Clearview’s presence.
The first two Insight forums aimed to provide a general understanding of AI, featuring renowned experts such as Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, and Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta. The second event, featuring Max Tegmark, founder of the Future of Life Institute, and Marc Andreesen, founder of Andreessen Horowitz, delved deeper into the keys to “transformative innovation.”

They also discussed the ethical and regulatory challenges that arise with the use of AI in these industries, emphasizing the need for responsible and transparent deployment of AI technology.
Both sessions provided valuable insights into the advancements and challenges of AI technology. The discussions revolved around the need for policymakers to strike a balance between fostering innovation and protecting the workforce.
