Tragedy Strikes on First Day of School in Ohio
The first day of school for one Ohio school district began with tragedy on Tuesday.
According to WHIO-TV, one student was killed and 23 were injured in Clark County, northeast of Dayton, when a school bus was struck by another vehicle and overturned.
The crash occurred at 8:15 a.m. and involved a Northwestern Local Schools bus carrying 52 elementary school children.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that a 2010 Honda Odyssey veered into the path of the school bus. The bus driver attempted to avoid a collision by driving onto the shoulder of the road but was unable to avoid being hit.
Upon impact, the bus veered off the road and flipped over onto its side.
Tragically, one student was thrown from the bus and died at the scene.

According to WKEF-TV, the bus did not have seat belts, which raised concerns among reporters. The driver of the bus, Alfred Collier, 68, of Springfield, sustained injuries but did not require hospitalization.
The driver of the other vehicle, Hermanio Joseph, 35, of Springfield, and a passenger, Roberto Mompremier, 37, also of Springfield, were hospitalized with non–life-threatening injuries.

The Northwestern Local Schools district had just opened its doors for the 2023-2024 school year, as reported by the Dayton Daily News.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his condolences in a statement, saying, “It’s a tragic incident, and we ask for space and patience and time as community members, emergency personnel on scene, families affected, the school district and all its members start the healing process.”
According to WCMH-TV in Columbus, first responders transported 13 victims to local hospitals, while parents took 10 children to hospitals. Fortunately, most of the injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
“This morning’s school bus accident in Clark Co. is truly heartbreaking,” Governor Mike DeWine wrote in a statement posted on social media.
