Russia’s Lunar Mission Races to Find Ice on the Moon
By Guy Faulconbridge
In an exciting race against India, Russia has switched on the scientific instruments aboard its lunar lander and scientists have begun processing the first data. The Luna-25 mission, the first of its kind since 1976, aims to be the first to find ice on the moon’s south pole. India’s Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander was launched last month, adding to the competition.
The Luna-25 craft was launched from Russia’s Far East at 2:11 a.m. on Friday Moscow time. As it hurtles towards the moon, the scientific instruments have been activated and the first data on the flight has been measured. Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, has confirmed that the project’s scientific team has already begun processing the data.
The Luna-25 mission is of great importance to Russia. If successful, it would demonstrate that the West’s sanctions over the Ukraine war cannot hold Russia back. However, failure would raise questions about Russia’s space ambitions. The United States may have won the race to put a man on the moon, but Russia has a rich history of lunar exploration, with Luna-2 being the first spacecraft to reach the moon’s surface in 1959.
Russia has plans for further lunar missions, including the possibility of a joint Russian-China crewed mission and even a lunar base. The success of the Luna-25 mission would be a significant step towards achieving these goals.
