Russia’s Lunar Mission Races to Find Ice on the Moon

By Guy Faulconbridge

In an exciting race⁤ against India, Russia has switched on the scientific ‍instruments aboard ⁢its lunar lander and scientists have ⁣begun processing the first data. The Luna-25 mission, the first of its kind since⁣ 1976, aims ⁢to be the first to find ice on the moon’s ⁣south pole.⁣ India’s Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander was launched last month, adding to the competition.

The Luna-25 craft was launched ⁢from Russia’s Far East at 2:11 a.m. ⁤on Friday Moscow time. As it hurtles towards the moon, the⁣ scientific instruments ⁤have‍ been activated‌ and the first data on the flight has‍ been measured. Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, has confirmed that the project’s scientific team has‍ already ⁣begun processing the data.

The Luna-25 mission⁢ is of great importance to Russia. ⁤If⁤ successful,⁣ it ‌would demonstrate that the West’s sanctions⁣ over the Ukraine war cannot ⁣hold⁢ Russia back. However, ⁣failure ‍would raise questions about Russia’s space ambitions. The United States may have won the race to put a man on the moon, but Russia has a ‌rich⁢ history of lunar exploration, ‍with Luna-2 being the first⁢ spacecraft to ⁣reach the moon’s surface in 1959.

Russia has plans for further lunar‍ missions, including ⁢the possibility ⁤of‍ a joint Russian-China crewed mission and even a lunar‍ base. The success of the Luna-25‍ mission would be a significant step towards achieving these goals.
