The cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars made a powerful statement at the MTV Movie and TV Awards, denouncing the growing number of anti-grooming laws that aim to protect children from raunchy drag shows and transgender indoctrination. During their acceptance speech for best reality competition series, the female impersonators got political and called out the state laws as “blatantly bigoted.”

Empathy for Queer and Trans People

Jinkx Monsoon, whose real name is Jerick Hoffer, emphasized the importance of hearing queer and trans stories from queer and trans people. She urged the audience to see the human beings behind the artistry and have empathy for one another. She also spoke out against the anti-queer and anti-trans legislations that are being passed.

Threats Against Drag Performers

Jaida Essence Hall, whose real name is Jared Johnson, spoke about the threats that drag performers face all over the world. She promoted the Drag Defense Fund, an ACLU initiative that raises money for the organization’s LGBTQ projects.

Pushing Raunchy Entertainment on Children

In recent years, drag queens have been aggressively pushing their often raunchy and sexually explicit form of entertainment on children through drag queen story hours at public libraries and live performances where children are among the audience. Even some churches are allowing drag queens to perform for congregations. In some cases, drag queens are even performing lap dances on minors.

Pushing Back Against Drag Shows with Children

States like Florida and Tennessee have pushed back by passing legislation preventing such shows where children are or may be present. LGBTQ activists have denounced these laws as bigoted, smearing them as “drag bans.”
