Rules Expert Thinks the NFL May Change QB Sneak Play Due to the Philadelphia Eagles’ Success
The Philadelphia Eagles are 14-3 and may not have been able to sneak into Super Bowl LVII. The quarterback sneak play spearheaded by Jalen HUTTS, an all-world athlete, made the Eagles stand out.
The Eagles announced their presence loudly. They boasted a bold record and an elite team of athletes. A.J. also had two 1,000-yard receivers. Brown and DeVontaSmith were joined by Miles Sanders, a workhorse back and receiver with nearly 1300 yards. They dominated Glendale’s Super Bowl party and were just a few points away from the second Super Bowl title.
The loud and proud Eagles matriculated through the simplest play possible: the quarterback sneak. The Eagles are the most prolific fourth down team in professional football because of Hurts’s mastery of this play. This team was 22-for-32 in the final down, with a remarkable 68.8% conversion rate. They were able to climb the ranks of the NFC with a combination of a balanced offense, and a Broad Street attitude.
The NFL might be clamping down on sneaking.
Former NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino, now the Rules Expert for FOX, says the play has provided an obvious advantage not just for the Eagles, but for any offense, thanks to what is regarded as the ‘tush push’. This is where the additional players behind Blandino give the QB a push on his backside to move the pile.
Blandino believes that the league will seek to change how scrum happens. “I’d be shocked if they don’t make a change.”
“I was talking to (Broncos head coach) Sean Payton during The Super Bowl, and he said we’re going to do this every time next season if they don’t take it out,” Blandino said. “It’s a rugby scrum.”
“This is just not a skillful play,” He went on. “This is just a tactic that’s not an aesthetically pleasing play, and I think the competition committee is going to take a look at it.”
Blandino also compared this musclebound ‘man advantage’ to the same (now-banned) practice on the defensive side of the ball. Particularly during field goals or extra points.
“If you remember on field goals and extra points, they used to be able to push the defensive linemen into the formation,” he said. “The weak link in the offensive line would be found. They would be able to keep their legs together. Then you’d get two to three defensive linemen, sometimes two, and two to four linebackers pushing into the player.
“We got rid of that.”
The annual League meeting of the NFL will be held in Phoenix, Arizona on May 26-29. Although it is not yet clear if the QB Sneak Rule will be discussed, the general agenda will likely include officiating. Fans have a low perception of fair calls in the field. Roger Goodell & Company is sure to investigate this matter.
