The Republican Senate campaign arm released a new ad on Thursday slamming Democratic Arizona senatorial candidate Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) for abandoning his family while his wife was pregnant.

The 30-second “Deadbeat” ad from the National Republican Senatorial Committee is the latest sign of a bruising race to fill the vacating Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s (I-AZ) seat.

“One of life’s greatest joys, becoming a parent. But days before that life-changing moment, Ruben Gallego walked out on his family, abandoning his newborn son, leaving his wife, and then marrying a D.C. lobbyist,” the female narrator says in the ad.

“If deadbeat dad Ruben Gallego would abandon his own family, he won’t be there for Arizonans when it matters most,” the narrator continues. “Tell deadbeat Ruben Gallego Arizonans deserve a better choice.”

The Arizona Democrat and his former wife, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, split in 2016 while she was pregnant with their son. Gallego later married Sydney Barron in 2021 and had a daughter born in July.

Gallego is running against Republican Kari Lake for the open Arizona seat that will help determine control of the Senate.

A RealClearPolitics poll average shows Gallego leading Lake by 4.5 percentage points.

Kate Gallego endorsed her ex-husband in the race. “I’m proud to endorse Ruben because I know first-hand his commitment to building a brighter future for Arizona,” Kate Gallego said in a statement in December.

The NRSC ad comes just days after Gallego slammed Lake over her abortion stance in a 30-second ad this week. In the ad, Lake claims she “doesn’t believe in abortion,” and that it is the “ultimate sin.”

The ad wars in the battleground state are likely only to grow more brutal after Arizona’s Supreme Court upheld a Civil War-era abortion ban in the state.

Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia changed the race’s projection from a toss-up to leans Democratic after the ruling.

Abortion has been a successful tool to mobilize voters on behalf of Democrats since the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in 2022. The Democratic Party is hoping that another election on abortion will help President Joe Biden and Gallego win in Arizona.

Yet, the NRSC isn’t giving up on winning the Senate seat, which would greatly help the GOP retake the Senate.

“Arizona women can’t trust a man who divorced his wife when she was weeks away from having their child,” NRSC spokesman Tate Mitchell said in a statement.

The Washington Examiner reached out to Gallego’s campaign for comment.
