Around 45 US soldiers wounded in Syria and Iraq due to Iranian-linked attacks during Israel conflict.
Increased Attacks on U.S. Forces by Iranian Proxies Result in Injuries
Over the past month, approximately 45 U.S. service members have been injured in a series of attacks launched by Iranian proxies against U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria. These attacks have intensified in recent days, posing an ongoing threat to American troops.
According to Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the al Asad Air Base in Iraq has been targeted 20 times since mid-last month, while the al Tanf garrison in Syria has faced 18 attacks during the same period. The severity of the situation is evident as the number of injured service members has risen significantly.
Increasing Injuries and Retaliatory Strikes
Ryder revealed that on October 17 and 18, around 45 U.S. troops reported injuries, surpassing the initial count of 21. Among these injuries, five troops at al Tanf suffered traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), while 10 others sustained minor injuries. Additionally, nine troops at al Asad Air Base reported minor injuries, and one person was injured at Erbil Air Base in Iraq on October 26.
Although two initially injured service members returned to duty, they were later transferred to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany for further treatment. Thankfully, both are now in stable condition.
All of these injuries occurred prior to the U.S.’s retaliatory strikes in eastern Syria on October 26, as confirmed by Ryder.
Responsibility and U.S. Response
The United States holds Iran accountable for these attacks and has taken action accordingly. In response, the U.S. military targeted two facilities in Syria associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. One strike focused on a ”weapons storage area,” while the other targeted “an ammunition storage area,” as stated by a senior military official.
The official emphasized that the United States seeks to avoid conflict and further hostilities. However, the Iran-backed attacks against U.S. forces are deemed unacceptable and must cease. The U.S. is prepared to take additional measures to protect its personnel if necessary.
Furthermore, U.S. officials have cautioned Iran against targeting American troops in the region and advised them to refrain from involvement in Israel’s conflict with Hamas, a group historically supported by Iran.

What factors have contributed to the recent increase in attacks on U.S. forces by Iranian proxies?
Iod. The attacks have included the use of rockets, drones, and other weapons that have caused injuries to U.S. personnel.
The Iranian proxies responsible for these attacks are believed to be affiliated with Shiite militias, which have a long history of hostility towards the United States. These militias operate with the support and guidance of the Iranian government, which seeks to assert its influence in the region and challenge American presence.
The recent increase in attacks can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated in recent years, particularly after the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018. This withdrawal led to the imposition of harsh economic sanctions on Iran, which severely affected its economy and increased its desperation to push back against perceived American aggression.
Furthermore, the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in January 2020 marked a significant turning point in the conflict between Iran and the U.S. forces. Soleimani was widely regarded as a key figure in the Iranian regime and his death led to vows of revenge from the Iranian government. The recent attacks can be seen as part of this ongoing retaliation.
The repeated attacks on U.S. forces not only pose a direct threat to American service members but also undermine the stability and security of the region. The targeted bases, such as al Asad Air Base, house not only U.S. troops but also Iraqi and other coalition forces. The attacks not only endanger the lives of U.S. personnel but also put the lives of local forces at risk.
In response to these attacks, the U.S. has taken a series of measures to protect its troops and deter further aggression. Additional defensive capabilities have been deployed to the targeted bases, including air defense systems and Patriot missile batteries. Moreover, the U.S. has carried out retaliatory strikes against Iranian-backed militias in both Iraq and Syria. These strikes aim to send a clear message that attacks on U.S. forces will not be tolerated and will be met with a strong response.
Despite these measures, it is clear that the threat from Iranian proxies remains significant. The attacks on U.S. forces continue to occur, and there is a persistent risk of escalation and further casualties. The situation requires a comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of Iranian aggression and strengthens regional security cooperation.
It is vital for the United States to work with its allies in the region, such as Iraq, to counter the influence of Iranian-backed militias and seek a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing tensions. Additionally, efforts should be made to bolster intelligence-sharing and coordination between the U.S. and its partners to better anticipate and prevent future attacks.
As the attacks on U.S. forces by Iranian proxies persist, it becomes increasingly important to address this issue and find a sustainable solution. The safety and well-being of American service members are of utmost importance, and their sacrifices must not be in vain. A comprehensive strategy is needed to mitigate the threat posed by Iranian proxies and protect the security interests of the United States and its allies in the region.
