Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed legislation that allows “patriotic organizations” such as the Boy Scouts of America to recruit in Florida schools and also denounced Satanism.

This law also opens the door for the Girl Scouts, Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America, Boys and Girls Club of America, Future Farmers of America, Little League Baseball, Marine Corps, and Naval Sea Cadet Corps, among others, to give presentations in schools. In addition, it allows for chaplains to speak to students while keeping Satan worshippers from infiltrating classrooms.

“We’re not playing those games in Florida,” DeSantis said on Thursday. “That is not a religion. That is not qualifying to be able to participate in this, so we’re going to be using common sense when it comes to this.”

About the service and sports organizations, DeSantis said the goal is to help people know the programs that are out there, which in the past have gained members through word of mouth.

“I really believe that when you are engaged in extracurricular activities, athletics, some of these other things, that’s going to be a net positive for these students and it’s really important that kids remain active,” DeSantis added.

However the governor clarified that Florida is still a “free state”, so every parent will have the choice of opting their child out of a presentation once informed by the school district when the organizations will be visiting.

The legislation comes after the Boy Scouts of America suffered amid its court-mandated compensation to sexual abuse victims over the years. It has a scant $2.46 million to reorganize itself while paying upwards of $2.4 billion in its settlement.

Among the insurers of this settlement is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which severed ties with the Boy Scouts to pursue its own youth program instead in 2020. At the time, young male members of the church made up almost one-fifth of Boy Scouts.

Today there are over 1 million Boy Scouts, which is less than half of what the organization had just four years ago.
