Women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines spoke out against University of South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley, calling her a “sellout” over her support for transgender athletes.

Staley made her comment during a press conference on Saturday, during which she said she was “of the belief” that an athlete who considers themselves to be a woman should be allowed to play. Gaines commended Staley for her coaching record, including winning two championships, but was much more critical of her answer to the press question.

“In three years at South Carolina, she’s won two championships,” Gaines said on Fox News’s Fox and Friends. “I think her record is 109-3. That’s unprecedented, so clearly she’s great at what she does, and she’s developed many incredible athletes whom I admire, but she’s either proving herself, to your point, to be entirely incompetent or a sellout, and personally, I don’t think she believes what she said.”

The Outkick host elaborated that Staley took time to answer the question, noting that her hesitation “spoke volumes.” She also said she believes Staley was facing pressure to be politically correct to the press, a pressure she herself has had to face in the past.

“So what I think this boils down to is she didn’t have courage to stand with women,” Gaines said. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for her, and she blew it. And truthfully my guess is she’s OK with it until her team is defeated by one or more men playing on the opposite team.”

Gaines also took to social media to speak out against Staley’s response, writing that “considering yourself a woman” is the threshold for being able to play in women’s sports.

Last week, Gaines spoke out against a veto Gov. Tony Evers (D-WI) made on legislation regarding transgender athletes in school sports, arguing he does not represent the values of his state. She has encouraged residents to contact their local lawmakers to override the governor’s veto.
